Trail Right-of-way

The reason I am posting this is because I recently have had some close calls.  Most people know and understand the trail right-of-way rules.  A downhill rider yields to uphill, pass on the left when trail allows, etc.  Here are two more that need to be addressed.  If you are taking a breather, get yourself and the rest of your group completely off the trail even if you don't think anyone is near you.  For the love of your fellow bikers, never take a break on a feature!  Has anyone else been encountering this lately?

UN-common sense. I will add on two-way trails such as Carolina thread trail at WWC, turn your Strava off and ride at a reasonable speed. I take my kids there to ride, and they are new to the sport. If you hurt my kid, the gloves are off dude, I am coming at you.

Yep..

One more thing.

Don't out ride your vision or your ability to brake or avoid on blind turns or switchbacks.
It's just common sense on bi-directional, multi-use trails that are open to the public.

"On a feature"?! Noooo. I can just picture someone teetering on their tiptoes on the camel hump / serpent features at Sherman or BYT... lol. I'm sure some idiot's done it though.

One thing I've been trying to do on wwc-thread is when I'm inbound and haven't seen anyone, the first person I meet I yell an 'all clear', at least up to the bridge where no other trails merge.

Another rule of thumb, if it's wearing a rental helmet, expect anything.

And beware of trail users with dogs off the leash.
I about creamed two of them today.
The last thing you expect is two coddled Lassey type dogs strolling two abreast on the trail in the opposite direction.
The two folks following the dogs looked up me like, surprise, surprise, it's a mountain biker. They just don't get it.
I'll have to say one thing for the dogs. I went by them on the right and they barely blinked.

Don't get me started...  The worst are the riders with off leash dogs...  I'm not a fan of this activity.

I once saw a runner stopped at the top of the wooden roll-in to the ski jump on the black loop at Beatty. He actually waved us up to pass him WHILE ON THE FEATURE. I appreciate him waving us to pass and all, but dude... just move off the feature so I can actually hit the jump, i'll wait. What he was even doing up there on foot to begin with... It is clearly a man made feature, specifically for biking.

It's like the people that stop in the round about to wave other people in in front of them. The right-of-way exists for a reason! If everyone follows it, everything works out smoothly.

That's a good idea.  I'm going to start doing that too.  As long as the squirrels stay out of the way, you know you can bomb it at least to the turnaround.

You can enter thread at the belmeade bridge.  So be careful, may not actually be clear.

^This. I ride in, and out, from thread. So yea never assume it's clear.

I personally wouldn't ever take an inexperienced rider on that section of trail. There are sections of that trail that are very fast and very narrow. Not to mention the blind spots around corners.

I don't even like riding thread trail anymore.  It's 3.5 miles of heavily used 2 way single track.  2 way single track! = oxymoron.  Pisgah is fine, USNWC its a head scratcher.

I rode it last night and it was the worst.  No courtesy at all, no right of way, just the lycra crowd trying to set PR's on a busy Thursday night.  It was like going the wrong way on the highway during rush hour.  Such a shame for such a quality trail.  Angry

Rant complete.

It is always best to look ahead of the trail and if you see people comeing or going then give a shout,,,having earbuds in is a bad thing, one is ok but both,,your like HEYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY and they still don't notice until your on them. Now if your riding and see children with there family's and come up on them fast you not only startle them , you just might inspire them but that might not be the best thing to do. Share the trail as if it was your own. No reason to tuff guy and take off the gloves just be a stand up fella and get in front of your kids and put your hands out. If they don't respect that then , well,,,the ball is in your court cause you may not know who your about to drop..Basically , I think the thread needs to be one way and one way only, I love killing it on a weekday due to no one being there and you can just go, now on the weekends , Sherman is good for that..WWC is not. It is a madhouse out there of inexperienced riders who are trying to learn ,,,let em live to ride another day and maybe help them along the way...Just Sayin' ,,,RAMFB....

The worst offenders are the fools who know better...  I have been riding that trail 5-7 times a week since it opened... riders who know better are the worst offenders.  green hats are not the problem there.  The trail is fast...  Right of way knowledge on a two way trail is key.
