Would love to do this... and the knee is getting to the point where I could probably ride most of it.

Unfortunately, have to miss it though.... we have friends from AZ meeting us in Greer for the Albino Skunk music fest.

Hope you guys (and gals) have a great time!

I want to go but I have a number of newbie questions.

I ride about 30 miles a week over 4 ~1 hr rides.  I try not to ride 3 days in a row, but have and have done a few longer rides, 2-2.5 hrs at Lake Norman and Harbison.  For riding, gear, I'm more on the minimalist side and until yesterday, never bothered with wearing padded shorts.

For this trip, I assume I should get a hydration pack (thinking of the Osprey Viper 9) and wear padded shorts.  Anything else?

Still, I'm concerned about my ability to ride a whole day Saturday and some on Sunday and possibly Friday.  I know I can stay at camp if not up for ride, but wanted to know what to expect from others first experience with such a trip.

Finally, I understand we'll be sleeping at a camp.  I don't have any gear for that but can get a sleeping bag.  Do we share tents?  Anything else I need?

Thanks.

First, their will be different groups to ride with so you will have the option to join whichever group you feel best fits your pace and abilities.  No worries their.

A hydration pack is always a good idea. Not only for water, but for snacks and such.  Osprey makes great stuff.  I have a Raptor 10 and love it.  The Viper should be fine.

Padded shorts are more of a personal preference.  I have never done well with them so I don't use padded bibs or shorts.  I have heard that if you go that route don't skimp on cheap ones and the fit is very important.  Others can offer better advice.

Usually you would bring your own tent or hammock but if you want you might find someone who will have extra space in their tent.

Other then that just bring your regular riding supplies, helmet, gloves, bike, extra tube and supplies for fixing a flat.  That's about it.  Breakfast Saturday morning will be provided, dinner Saturday night is provided, and some breakfast Sunday morning as well.  Bring snacks to fill the gaps.  Hope that helps

Good advice above but just to add, don't feel like this is 3 whole days of hard core riding. This is very social and you can ride as much or as little as you want. Friday is usually just a short ride before camping and socializing. A lot of people don't arrive till late Friday and so don't ride at all that evening. Sat is the more full day but again there will be different groups so you could can head out with whatever group is doing whatever mileage you are comfortable with. Then Sun some people might not ride at all and some might ride shorter and then head home. And some might ride another full day. So there are lots of options. There are also ways to short cut out and head back to camp if you have had enough.

Osprey packs are great. I have the Raven 14 (it's the women's version) and it's great. But I also have two Camelbak ones that I have had for many years now and they have withstood lots of abuse so take a look at them also.

Padded shorts to me are essential and I really can't ride long at all without them. But to each his/her own. I would echo to not skimp on them. You don't have to buy top of the line but don't go cheap either. I tried the cheap ones and all of them have ended up at the Goodwill or in the trash sooner or later. Find a brand that you like. They are all different. Equally important and really for me even more important is the saddle. It took me awhile to find a saddle that I like and now it's on all my bikes. All the brands are different so you just have to go through a lot of them to find what works for you. I like Terry but they are women's specific.

Also something to think about is gloves. On longer rides your hands will get tired and gloves help with that.

You will likely need a sleeping pad. I have an extra one if you need it. Its not the greatest but it would be ok if no one offers you a better one. This is "car camping" meaning you will be very near your car so you can also just bring whatever bedding makes you happy. Headlamps are really nice to have for walking around camp after dark and getting into your tent or reading etc. I have an extra one of those also.

Otherwise just bring whatever snacks and drinks you like. Your main meals are included. Multiple people will have coolers so you can pretty much always find space somewhere to keep your stuff cold.

That's about all I can think of right now.

As far as the tent goes anything from a poly tarp stretched between two trees to a $30.00 tent from Academy to the Taj Majal versions will work. If you bring a tent be sure and have a ground cloth/tarp for it. I have an extra cot and pad for it if you wish. It helps getting off the ground even if it is only a couple inches. Some have slept in a hammock. I keep a few of the chemical warmers to take the chill off if needed.
Bring a camp chair for hanging out around the fire. (There are a lot of true stories told there  Wink).
You are welcome to share my tent but I hear tell that I snore loudly.  Embarrassed
As far as the group rides Emily is right. Our group camp is close to part of the Warrior Creek Trail on the East side of the system. THere is also OVT which is a downhill to the dam for 6 miles and Shiners loop off of that. I expect some will want to go across the lake to Dark Mountain which has a fair amount of climbing or so I'm told. A little further West toward Boone is Rock Knob Bike Park.
Usually in the Fall trip it is warmer than the Spring Trip. Usually.
For the evening at camp it is BYOB.
I have a padded liner for my shorts. It helps. Mine are Zoic brand.

When I was a kid, I had a cheap dome tent that I got at a store called Dunham. It cost me like twenty bucks. Good to check out if you can handle camping. Most MTB destinations have a campground or one nearby. If you ride Pisgah or DuPont, there isn't a whole lot of cheap lodging, so camping is almost a must if you want to be on a budget. Don't forget a cheap tarp to use as a ground cloth in case of wet conditions. I got a cheap self inflated camping pad at Cabela's. Might want to check there for your camping needs. They have semi knowledgeable sales people who can guide you to what you need. If you want to go lightweight, try REI. I myself, the older I've gotten, have decided on comfort. So I have a  Coleman easy set 6 person dome tent. I also have a queen size inflatable matress. I have light weight stuff, but it doesn't see as much use as the car camping stuff. I keep the lightweight stuff for when I decide to do that long bike packing trip.......maybe I'll do a credit card tour instead🚵🚴😜

Do what you like. Stop hating people for their riding habits and get back to hating them for their skin color, religion, politics, and sexual orientation.

I'm leaning toward this route, I already have the mattress.

Good NEWS! Since we have the Large Group Camp we have decided to open this up to other IMBA/SORBA Chapters and Members. There is even a rumor that SORBA President Tom Sauret will be there to demonstrate his riding prowess.
The Warrior Creek, Overmountain Victory Trails, The Hollar Trail, Shiners Loop, and Dark Mountain Trails have something for everyone.
The camp ground can accomodate plenty of MTB folks. There are even benches around the large fire pit. Always a guarantee of good mostly TRUE stories.

Abbreviated Top 10 Rules

Rule #1 // Obey The Rules.

Rule #2 // Lead by example.
It is forbidden for someone familiar with The Rules to knowingly assist another person to breach them.1

Rule #3 // Guide the uninitiated.
No matter how good you think your reason is to knowingly breach The Rules, it is never good enough.

Rule #5 // Harden The F*-# Up.

Rule #6 // Free your mind and your legs will follow.
Your mind is your worst enemy. Do all your thinking before you start riding your bike.  Once the pedals start to turn, wrap yourself in the sensations of the ride – the smell of the air, the sound of the tires, the feeling of flight as the bicycle rolls over the Dirt.

Rule #9 // If you are out riding in bad weather, it means you are a bada@#. Period.
Fair-weather riding is a luxury reserved for Sunday afternoons and wide boulevards. Those who ride in foul weather – be it cold, wet, or inordinately hot – are members of a special club of riders who, on the morning of a big ride, pull back the curtain to check the weather and, upon seeing rain falling from the skies, allow a wry smile to spread across their face. This is a rider who loves the work.

Rule #10 // It never gets easier, you just go faster.
As this famous quote by Greg LeMan tells us, training, climbing, and racing is hard. It stays hard. To put it another way, per Greg Henderson: “Training is like fighting with a gorilla. You don’t stop when you’re tired. You stop when the gorilla is tired.”

I'm sure it will be fine and we will have a Good Time, Regardless can't wait  Wink

I think this hurricane may be my fault. It's rained on every camping trip I've taken for 2.5 years straight now.

Looks like the rain will mainly be along the coast and weather should be good where you guys are going. Wish I could be there... have friends from out of town and we are headed to Albino Skunk.

You guys have fun and hit those berms HIGH!  Cheesy

Unfortunately, looks like rain Friday and Friday night.  How well do the trails drain?

Friday is usually mostly setting up and the hospitality (this year at Brushy Creek Cycles). Saturday rides and the Saturday night feed. Saturday is clearing and sunny.
This system at Warrior should drain fairly well. With the storm moving off the coast the rain should be a lesser amount.
If nothing else like Doc00t posted Rocky Knob is close and bomb proof.

Plan for Saturday morning is to ride at Rock Knob.  Meeting at 10:00 at the Warrior Creek Trail head and we can head to Rocky Knob.  Or you can meet us at Rocky Knob.

Might ride Dark Mountain later that afternoon.

OVT and Warrior Creek trails currenty closed

Another successful Fall Trip is in the books.  Scott C; Tom A; Chad B; Bryan H; Emily W; and I braved the weather at Warrior Creek for the weekend. Many thanks to Shannon St Clair at Brushy Mountain Cycles for hosting us on Friday. The beer and pizza were welcome.
Though the Warrior Creek, OVT trails were closed due to the 2 inches of partly cloudy that fell on them over the weekend. It cleared Saturday evening for a perfect meal of  rib eye, seasoned roasted green beans, corn on the cob, and hot peach or cherry cobber. The breakfasts were pretty special too. Sitting around the fire was pretty good too,
And the ride: We went to Rocky Knob Bike Park at Boone. Nine miles of excellent intermediate level and above trail with little mud, and few roots and plenty of climbing. Lots of rocks sized from boulders to baby heads.  The county did it right  Ended up with a  fast fun technical downhill on PB&J made for a very fine Saturday ride.
Looking forward to the Spring Trip where ever that may be.

Thank you to everyone who came out.  Sorry the weather was not better but I really enjoyed riding Rocky Knob with everyone.  The conditions really kept you on your toes.  Hope to see you all next time!
