I'm not the expert on these things, but nobody's responded. The Acera is basically dept store quality. To get to the lower end bike shop quality you'd need to find a Deore, LX, SLX (depending on age) level. But a quick google didn't turn up anything like that for a 7 speed. I did see an Altus, which I think is a small step up from the Acera. But I expect it's an older bike and the Acera would do the job.

If a 9 speed cassette could be put on your bike, you'd have a world of options for very little money. You might just take the bike by a bike shop and see what they say.

Thanks. Upgrading to a 9 spese would also mean buy new chain and derailleur. That is over $ 200 must in parts. I think i will go with the altus, as you suggested, and when i get ready i will upgrade the bike to a better model.

Check with the Recyclery. They should have something in 7/8 spd that will suit your needs for not much $.

7 spd Acera will work just fine.  It's found on most entry level MTB bikes from most/all major manufacturers.

+1

I just put a new set of Acera (SL-M310) 3x8 shifters on the mother-in-law's hybrid bike. They aren't the sexiest shifters in the world, but they work perfectly. Can drop 2-3 gears with one push of the thumb if necessary. Upshifts are index finger (trigger pull) only, unlike some of the higher end Shimano stuff that is push OR pull.

In reality, its only 7 speeds so it doesn't exactly require high precision indexing.
