Frameset
In 2002, Cervélo pioneered the aero road bike category with the Soloist, and continues to set industry benchmarks with their S Series bicycles.  They are not only faster in the wind tunnel, but are proven in the real world. Engineered for World Tour sprint finishes and solo breakaways, they are also light enough to surprise on the toughest climbs.
Keen to capitalize on the popularity of the Soloist with teams like CSC, in 2007 Cervélo created the ground breaking SLC-SL version that filled the void between its lightest model, the R3, and the standard issue Soloist. It aimed to be the ultimate road frame, employing unidirectional ultrahigh modulus carbon, which allows an exceptionally thin wall tubing and a NACA aero profile.  The frame is under the 1kg weight threshold that's crucial for superbike status. The 3T fork is specific to Cervélo, a 100 percent carbon design with aero profile blades.

Equipment
This Cervélo SLC-SL is decked out with the 3T branded handlebar and stem that suit the sleek lines perfectly.  The Fizik Antares 00 Carbon saddle is very light at 140g, but offers firm support for powerful riders and is comfortable enough for century rides.  The SRAM Red 10 speed drivetrain is light, stiff, and reliable.

Wheels
The Edge Composites (now Enve) carbon clincher aero wheels on Chris King R45 hubs laced with Sapim CX-Ray bladed spokes are well matched to the capabilities of the Cervélo frame and fork.  Being clinchers makes them practical for regular use.  By combining a 45mm front and 65mm rear, the tradeoffs between aerodynamics, weight and stability are minimized. The front is a 20 spoke heads-in radial lacing pattern, which gives the greatest lateral stiffness possible.  The rear uses an asymmetric 24 spoke Triplet lacing pattern. By using a 32 hole hub and 24 hole rim, and 3x lacing 16 spokes on the drive side while 1x lacing 8 spokes heads-in on the non-drive side, the spoke tension is perfectly balanced.  This provides good lateral stiffness while making the wheel less susceptible to spoke loosening. The carbon rims are stiff, strong, and allow high spoke tension.  Time and miles pass, and the wheels are still true.

Handling
The Cervélo represents the ultimate expression of what a lot of riders are looking for in a team issue bike. The ride is unmistakably firm but it is as fast point to point as anything out there. Press hard on the pedals uphill and the SLC-SL responds, reminding you that this is a highly effective hill climbing tool as well as a master of the flat stages. Point it downhill the level of steering control is exemplary.

Verdict
No frame manufacturer before Cervélo had ever created a design so alive on the climbs and capable of setting a blistering pace at the front on the flat sections of a race, so it's no surprise that the Soloist SLC-SL was the frame to have in the pro peloton when it came out.  Cervélo arguably created the equivalent of a Formula 1 racing car, giving an uncompromising and exciting ride.
