Boom, try it! I grew up on flats but rode all spring and summer on clips (mallet dh). I noticed I was getting lazy with hopping around the trail and getting over logs so I am on flats till next spring to regain some skill.

Also if you "only ride flats" or "flats for life" you should seriously try clipping in. It makes rock gardens and chop way more fun.

I often switch back to flats for this reason during fall/winter months...and because slippery leaves are easy to recover from when youre not clipped.

Just curious, of you guys that ride primarily flat pedals, how many of you also spend a significant time on road bikes?

I used to ride flat pedals until I started riding primarily on the road in 2009, in which case I ended up trying out clips on my hardtail and loved it.  Any time I find myself on a bike with flats now I find my back foot in the pedal stroke often trying to pull up a little, especially if I'm standing to pedal or sprinting.

I really have no problems going back-and-forth. I have Canfield crampon ultimate flats and some nice 5.10 shoes. The only adjustment for me is when I jump. That and making sure my feet stay planted and dont chatter off the pedals in the rough.

I ride clipped in on all my bikes. I tried riding DH with flats, but they tore up my shoes and I had a hard time keeping my feet in place when going off jumps, riding rock gardens and rough trails.

I ride clipless on my road bike. I had been riding clipless since first generation SPD. Switched to flats two years back on the mtb. I like the bail out option. My five tens stick to the pedals fairly good. Enough to give the feel of cliPless. I've been riding catylist pedals, which give me a firmer platform and better climbing power

I learned on flats.  Switched to clipless a few years ago.  Loved the clipless advantage  but the trails I rode up north were more mellow.  Since moving to Charlotte I wasn't enjoying clipless as much and eventually took a bad spill in Dupont that convinced me to go back.  Now ride strictly flat again and love it.  Ripping the trail with more aggressive lines and tons of confidence.  A pair of quality flat pedals WITH FIVE tens and u are as close to clipless without being clipped in  IMO.  Never going back.
And yes when I ride my road bike during summer months it's clipless only.....but road bikes should only be clipless.

I have clips on my road bike (SPD) but I'm not a fan.  I often have to un-clip on road rides to change my foot position on the pedals for awhile.  I like the pedal contact way back in the arch of my foot.  They don't make shoes that let you slide the clip back far enough to accomplish this.

Every once in awhile my shines pay the price when I make a mistake, but I am way more comfortable on flats. It is what it is.  Use what works for you.  Some crazy people like rigid forks and/or padded shorts and bibs.  More stuff to add to the list of things I tried and did not like.

Many new SPD shoes come with removable plates on the sole to get the cleat waaay on back. Thats how I have mine set up. My cleat is almost directly over the pedal spindle. Makes going from flats to SPDs less annoying and doesnt confuse my brain too much  Cheesy

I was really disappointed when I opened this thread and it wasn't about Fish and Chips.

I guess it's time to get my eyes checked.

You're not the only one brother - I had a brief surge of excitement followed by indescribable (and irrational) disappointment after my brain sorted out the association it had made...

There's a pub in Earl's Court, London - best Fish and Chips in the world. There's a pub in Worcester MA that's a close second. Anybody know a good place around here??

Let me first say I'm no fish & chips expert by any means at all.  I'm a redneck from Mississippi.  Fish & chips to us would at best mean fried catfish and Lays potato chips.

But, the first place I'd head to would be Sir Edmond Halley's Restaurant and Freehouse under/behind Park Road Shopping Center because they have good food and they are mountain bike community friendly.

There may be other British pubs that may offer better, but that's for someone else to post up about.

Good eating, riding and Happy Holidays to all on TTB!!!

I will echo Sir Ed's as a good joint.

If you're near Huntersville, Taste of Buffalo do a nice Haddock fish fry on Fridays. I don't see much Haddock down this way.

I hear Lancasters has a good fried catfish. That's not my jam though.
