What to consider when thinking about new wheel set

So because I have a hard time not buying new stuff, I'm lightly considering a set of new wheels for my Tallboy.  Problem is I'm not sure what I have to consider when planning a new wheel.  It came with Easton AR24 wheels which are 24mm internal and I think 27mm external.  I run Maxis Ikon 2.2 tires front and rear and like them.  The stock hubs are SRAM.  I honestly don't know where those wheels/hubs rank against something I could have built up or even a preconfigured set and how much I would need to spend to make an appreciable difference.  I don't think I'd be willing to spend enough to get something like a set of ENVE carbon rims however.  My limit would probably be in the $1000 range give or take.  For those of you in the know, could I make a difference in the bike by spending that?  I don't want to spend it just for the sake of bling, I'd like to be able to tell the difference for the money.  And FWIW, I'm a recreational rider, 165 lbs, and do almost all my riding around Charlotte and the area 2-4 days a week time and weather permitting.

Dont replace your wheels unless there is something wrong with them.

Most people who ask me to build a set of wheels have a issue with the ones they are on. Some are breaking spoke, some have rims not sturdy enough, Some want better engagement, some want something lighter, some want something wider, some have bearing/design issues.

From what i can tell, yours are more of a XC+ type. Not too racey light, but not all mountain/Enduro heavy either. Even the width is middle of the road. Sounds like they fit your riding style.

You might could build something lighter, but your only going to same about 80/90 grams on the rims unless you go race weight light. THen you compremise durability.  Better hubs? Whats wrong with the ones you have? I do like all the wider rims they have now. (I love me some wide tires). Unfortunately some of the rims are also shallower whcih means they are laterally stiffer, but they are vertically softer which could increase the load cycle swing on the spokes. Will a wider rim/tire fit in your frame.

Thanks for the info Jerry.  I can't say that there's anything wrong with the wheels but I do wish the hubs had quicker engagement.  They aren't sloppy, but working the pedals in a rock garden or other technical section makes me want them to engage quicker.  Maybe that's what I should do is put a different set of hubs on what I got already.

Depending on what SRAM hubs you have you may be able to upgrade the engagement on the cheap.  From my understanding many of the low/mid range hubs run on a freehub with 2 paws included but have space to insert the 2 other offset paws that would double engagement points.  You would of course need to purchase another freehub body, or get some replacement parts to get what you need to upgrade.  Talk to user BudLeach he's done it.

I also agree with Enoch, I do like wider rims as of late if you do get into a wheelset.  Significant traction advantage, I'm on 30mm internal.

I have a stock set of SRAM Roam 30 wheels that came on a Jenson complete bike build. The rear hub came with 26 POE via a two pawl freehub. But the freehub itself was machined to accept two more pawls. SRAM calls it "Double Time", where one pair of pawls is out of sync with the other, so only two of the four pawls are engaged at a time. (I know i9 does something similar with a 60 tooth ring to get 120 POE)

SRAM will not sell the pawls and springs separately, had to purchase a new XD freehub driver body and pull the parts out of it. But my hub now has 52 POE like the Roam 40s and up. ~$65 upgrade, but was worth it in my opinion.

This is what I bought. (not sure if it will work with your hub, depends on exact model)

The extra POE allowed me to live with the wheels until I can afford to spring for a new wheelset that has more internal width and less weight. For now, my Roam 30s work just fine.

The hubs that came on the bike are the SRAM MT716 on front and MT746 on the rear.  I try and find out if that mod can be done

If you mean MTH746. It doesn't appear to be possible for that hub, not a "double time" compatible hub shell. This would be the XD driver body for that hub:

No way the double time freehub body could be a direct replacement. Diameter of pawl end is way different, not to mention internal bearing and axle interfaces are likely different as well. Sorry for the bad news.

Thanks for the info.  It's funny how our expectations change as we ride more.  When I got this bike I was in love with how much quicker the engagement of the hub is over the Trek X-Caliber I had.  Now I want something better.  It will never end I'm sure

At least now you've figured out what your current wheels lack. Time to spend some coin now. I would also go wider rims if your building.
