winter shoes

I am struggling to find an acceptable pair of winter shoes.  I need something that is semi-warm and comfortable that works well with speedplay frog pedals [they have a wide base for the shoe], but not too bulky.

Any suggestions ?

I have cold feet when its 50 degrees, I hate it. I picked up a pair of Specialized Defroster Mountain Bike Shoes 2 seasons ago. They really helped me extend my ride time on cold days. They are also waterproof so you can splash though puddles and creeks with out fear. You should take a look at them. Make sure you try them on with the socks you would wear on a cold day.

Wool socks and plastic bags...

I use the same shoes year round. If its below freezing I put plastic bags over my feet between my socks.

Works great!

If you pedal hard enough, you won't even notice your feet being cold  Grin

Half size up your shoes and wear a mid weight merino wool hiking sock.
Any fit issues can be easily adjusted with a replacement insole.

I wear the same pair of shoes all year which are warm weather shoes with vents in the uppers.  When it gets too cold I put on a bit thicker sock and use Gore shoe covers. They will fit on any shoe with any form of cleat or sole.  I have found the most success using the Gore windstopper product for gloves, shoe covers, etc for winter riding.  Very light weight, breathable but still keeps insulation.  I will not say they are the coolest looking things but are you really worried about fashion riding a bike in the woods when its less than 30 degrees and dark? Cheesy

I got a close out pair ($70!) of Shimano winter/goretex shoes that work really well.  Much better than thick wool socks and plastic bags, which works, but not as well.

I'm guessing your real issue is with the speedplay frog petals.  You can cut away the parts of the sole that interfere with the pedal or cleat.

I use these: (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

Snug fit that looks decent and still keeps you warm w/o having to buy a dedicated set of winter shoes.  Work for road or mtn bike.  Plus plenty of room for your cleats.
