Updating a 26" Nomad

I've ridden a few plus bikes now and I'm really liking them.  Only issue is that I would need to sell my Nomad to get one and nobody seems to want a 26" bike nowadays...  So I had the bright idea of turning my bike into a plus bike (or as close as I can get).  It's a gen 2 Nomad (2010).  I had a set of wheels built a while back with Hope Pro2 Evo hubs, DT Swiss EX500 hoops and currently has Specialized Purgatory 2.3's.

They've been great so far, I just want to go with a wider wheel and a higher volume tire to soak up some of the smaller chatter that a plus bike does so well.  I'm still running tubes, so there should be some noticeable improvement with such a big change and lower tire pressure.

I've been doing a lot of reading and seem to think that I'd like to re-lace the wheel with a Stan's Arch MK3 (26mm internal width) and go to 2.4 Ardents.  I would cram a 2.8 in there if it would fit, but I don't think I have the clearance with regard to the added height.

Anyone around here running a combo that's similar?  Thoughts?

If you can stand the weight, the Flow sure are wide. If your gonna run wider tires, it really helps stabilize them by using as wide of a rim as possible.

Do what you like. Stop hating people for their riding habits and get back to hating them for their skin color, religion, politics, and sexual orientation.

I run Velocity Blunts (35mm internal width). Not the lightest wheel around but definitely bomb proof.

The Blunt is a pretty wide rim.  What tires are you running?  I've seen Trail King 2.4's on Blunt rims and they were HUGE!  Nobby Nic's would be nice, but they're a tad expensive and I'm not sure that they'll be all that durable considering they are quite a bit lighter (i.e. thinner).

I reached out to Maxxis about the Ardent and received a response that I thought was interesting.

"With the Ardent being a very old tread, the rim profile that this tire was designed around is a 19mm internal width.  That being said, in order to keep the recommended profile of the tire, I would recommend using a more narrow rim to maintain that shape and performance.  Between a rim with a 26mm iw and a 29mm iw, I would go with the 26mm iw rim to maintain a similar profile."

Kinda throws a wrinkle in my plans so far.  I guess I'll have to research what 2.4 tires were designed for a wider rim.  Probably running out of options as 26'ers seems to be a dying breed.

I'm running an Ardent 2.3 rear and a Minion DHR 2.4 up front. They kind of look like a motocross wheel/tire setup but not quite plus size. Plenty of volume though to get the plus size benefits without needing boost hub spacing.

I am running 26" 2.4 Ardents on DT Swiss EX471 rims which are 25mm internal measurement. They fill out to about 2.5" running tubeless at around 20psi.  They do great. It's really about the size of a normal size 27.5" tire

Let's meet up for a ride and you can see how they feel on a similar bike (Mojo HD)

I'm game.  This weekend is obviously going to be pretty bad, but let's see about next weekend maybe.
