Has there been thought given to Sherman reversal?

So I just rode LNSP in the new direction and was impressed with what a difference it makes. Many years ago, my pals and I would go to Beech Spring at times when there were few riders and we'd ride it in the opposite direction.

So my question is if or how would one would go about purposing a bidirectional change at Sherman's Branch? My thinking is it would require the same as at LNSP in terms of signage amendments and notices posted.

Of course some would ask why, what benefit? That's obvious enough in that the same trail in reverse direction is actually a totally new experience. I would imagine the RC in reverse would be on par with RR's climbs (start of Gorge and No Name) in terms of steepness and difficulty.

I enjoy Sherman a lot - although Steve's is my main ride. Just a thought as it would breathe some variety into the SB experience.

Thoughts? Comments?

It would be interesting to say the least.  I'd have to learn the line through those rock gardens all over again.  There are a couple of places where some sort of transition would need to be added possibly in the section between the long boardwalk and the bridge trail where the trail drops off.  That one knarly section on roller coaster where the trail drops off and takes a hard right would be tough in reverse too.  Maybe a couple other places I can't think of but mostly I think it would work.  Don't know if it's ever been discussed though.

While I'm sure it would be interesting I think it would do away with any flow the trail has, not to mention the jump line wouldn't work at all. As I think that the flow and speed are some of the best things about this trail I would have concerns.

Reversing Sherman will change it to an "always open" status!?  Sweet!   Wink

"That one gnarly section on roller coaster where the trail drops off and takes a hard right would be tough in reverse too."

I actually went over the handlebars on this section Sunday and pulled my "hammy." It was less painful to ride back to the parking lot in a granny gear than to walk back. I did the first section of the trail, from the end of roller coaster, at the silo, to the parking lot in reverse. It was pretty interesting and I thought the trail would be fun to do in reverse. I didn't realize how steep the little berm section was heading into the bridge over the creek with the skinny after it was until I rode up it.

It would probably be almost un ridable in the opposite direction.  I've never been an advocate of bi-directional trails locally or even switching directions.  Designing a trail for one direction allows for more design creativity and not having to compromise because the riding direction will reverse.  I'd say if you want to ride it in reverse just ride it in reverse.  The other problem is increased wear from turning climbs into descents.  Hawk loop at LNSP is a perfect example of that.

Again, if you want to ride a trail in reverse just ride it in reverse when there's not a lot of traffic.  I do it all the time at Fisher. Smiley

+1.

Sherman is definitely designed to flow in the current direction.

Not sure it's ever empty enough to ride in reverse, and there are a few places where an attempt to do so would needlessly endanger all parties.

Hey, a good Samaritan beefed up those table tops and you can huck 'em pretty well now. And, with the proper amount of speed, it's possible to clear the fire road in its entirety...  Roll Eyes

I will admit I did it one cold December morning when I was the only car in the parking lot. most of the trail has excellent visibility so it was safe-ish... Having said that, RC was something I dismounted  and walked the majority out of an abundance of caution. Without a doubt, RC would never be advisable bidirectionally as there are many blind corners, not to mention the flow is non existent that way.

I may venture a reverse run on main+ Lake loop from time to time if I can get there on less heavily ridden days but even then, the evil looks from StravaHeads may take the fun out of it.

All just a thought. Enough typing... time to go pedal.

I did it years ago early one morning with the builder ('course I didn't finish with him!). It's definately harder in reverse.

Also, night ride at Beatty in reverse is fun. You can really get confused in the dark going the opposite direction.

I'd like to propose a parking deck. That's what this place really needs.

Along that line I've wondered why the county doesn't smooth and gravel a portion of the powerline right-of-way to add parking. Even when the lot is completely full, the trails are not badly crowded, so it would seem that cheap additional parking wouldn't overly stress the facility.
