Future of Beatty BoyScout Bridge is doubtful

Print Post
A number of years ago a Local Scout built a replacement bridge over the creek at Beatty to help satisfy his Eagle Scoutt requirement.
Despite being washed downstream shortly after construction the bridge has provided a smooth crossing for thousands of cyclists , hikers and runners.
Sadly The landscaping timbers that were used for planking are rotting and do not appear that they are going to make it through Summer (let alone spring)
I think the telephone pole supports may still be solid as well as the anchors installed after the flood
So it may just be a matter of screwing on new decking.
Just a heads up if this was not on the Beatty To-do list

This guy? I noticed that a few weeks ago and agree it needs some work. Got down there and the poles do look decent, but I'm wondering if it could benefit from some bracing underneath as well. I'll get someone smarter than me to look at it.

The Creek crossing right after the wood feature with the two humps in it, you cut a hard left on a little berm into the bridge.

Is this a bridge needed for foot traffic?  This could be a natural bike wash feature.  Even North Meck Greenway has a creek crossing.

I used to be addicted to the Hokey Pokey but then I turned myself around.

Gotcha, I was trying to make it fit on the trail from that vantage.  It always fascinates me how different the trail looks going backwards.

Yea, this stream bed is much deeper than it appears in the photo. Couldn't bike it.

I helped guide my sons scout troop for the building of that bridge. The telephone poles should be in good condition. I would think replacing the landscaping timbers on the deck would be easier and cheaper than replacing the entire bridge.

I can't imagine with a little creativity that those telephone poles could not be salvaged.  It would SUCK to teplace them!

Tryjng to add a center support into the creek bed would probably be a bigger hassle than its worth. You might be able to sink a couple of 4×4's or Sullivans into each bank at an angle and then carriage bolt them to each pole 3 or 4 feet toward the center of the span. Has it developed some bounce?

Seemed a little springy last time I was out. I was thinking something along the lines of your suggestion: angled supports resting on 4x4 or 6x6 timberlocked into the bank.

Maybe sister a 2x6 to each pole or add a third beam (another pole or a 2x8)  down the middle? I think that woul stiffen it up.
