Don't you just hate......

Hearing about a cyclist getting hit by a car (a cop car no less) Then find that it's some idiot riding the wrong way in the dark, with no lights, on a busy non lighted stretch of road way. And he thinks it's not his fault because the cop should have seen him. Every morning I see some idiot riding the wrong way. When he makes his right turn when cars are making a right...........one day I know that the worse will happen

What drives me just as batty are those same idiots who decide It's perfectly fine to ride an extremely busy road in the heart of rush hour creating a traffic jam with cars behind them.  Then cars go around them playing chicken with oncoming traffic moving in other direction to avoid the biker.  It creates a dangerous scenario for everyone.

So, folks shouldn't be allowed to commute by bike?

I know it does not apply in "every" area, but often there are less busy routes that commuters can take to/from on their commute.  Just because you have a legal right to ride your bicycle on a congested/heavily auto traveled road doesn't mean you should do so.  As others have said, there is some self-responsibility involved.  I am fortunate to live in a town that is not heavily populated, but there are absolutely roads that I refuse to use during rush hour.

In the last 6 months I personally know two people who were killed in bike / car accidents.

The reality is that distracted driving has made road biking more dangerous than most things I can think of. And the situation is being compounded by urban sprawl which directs large volumes of traffic on to small farm to market highways that were never designed to handle the traffic they currently mis-handle.

If you choose to ride on the road please be careful and be sure to watch out for the other guy. Personally, my road bike has been on the wall for a couple of years and I'm pretty sure it's going to stay art for the foreseeable future.

I agree, I feel like road riding is more dangerous than even a few years ago due to new distractions. I still ride, but I do most of my riding with a group so we can be more visible. Granted that aint gonna stop somebody that just isn't paying attention, but I feel safer that way.

Also, touching on what somebody said above about the increased traffic on country backroads, I see it out here a good bit. People flying and plowing around corners across the midline, these roads surfaces are starting to show the added wear and tear around here. Not even safe out in the country  Embarrassed
