Converting shimano hyperglide to megarange

I'm looking into giving my son a larger granny gear option on his 3x7 speed equipped bike.  Very rarely does he use the front 22t on his triple and he loses SO much momentum when he does.  I want to give him a larger "bail-out" gear on his cassette and see that Shimano has a "Megarange" cassette that is still 7 speed like his current hyperglide cassette.  My question is can i use the current shifter/derailleur combo w/ the Megarange cassette?  Or will I have to swap to a Megarange specific shifter/derailleur with the cassette.

Oh, additional info...

The Megarange large gear is 34t and the hyperglide largest gear is a 28t.  Here is the Mega.

Since no one has replied, I'll give my 2 cents...Your current set up should work fine although you may have to replace the chain with one with a couple more links in it. Setting the B tension may be a little tricky and when shifting to the Megarange gear you may have to keep pressure on the shifter until the chain fully moves onto the cog.

Thank you for the response sir.  I hadn't even thought about the chain.  Good catch.  Since its a triple ring front it already has a long cage RD, so hopefully I can get away w/ it.  For the price its worth a shot.

My wife used to have a Trek 4300 with a 7 speed Megarange on it. It came stock, along with the Acera grade front and rear mech and the entry level Shimano trigger shifter/brake lever combo. Worked just fine. Yours should too as long as it's all still 7 speed.

Is your current wheel a freewheel or is it a freehub and cassette?  The mega range is a freewheel. I personally am not a fan of them as the gear spread is huge, but I understand what you're wanting to do.

It is a freewheel.  I'm trying to make it a little better for him w/o going crazy with it.

He could really be on an xs adult framed bike now, but I have to wait until this winter to upgrade him.    Planning to spend a little more time w/ that one setting it up.
