You ever notice that some folks treat you different when you don't ride the so called enthusiast bike. I bought a thousand dollar bike, at a LBS. But folks act like I'm riding a Walmart bike. And then you have the bike mags. Seems they never review the so called entry-level. I'm sure there are folk out there who can drop big coin on those bikes. The only time certain bikes get reviewed, is when they are compared to other low cost bikes. MBA claims that bike companies only send them there high end, because they know they will get a good review. But when you ask at a shop, they say the lower cost bikes outsell the high end Tongue

Hmmmm, don't really notice. But I usually don't give a rats ass what other people think. I mean, if I want your opinion, I'll tell it to you.  Tongue

Butt seriously. Ride your bike and enjoy it. Doesn't matter what it is (well as long as it is in safe condition).

Budget spec'd bikes dont sell ad space in magazines and online review sites... Few will read an article on a basic $1k hardtail. But the new $10k carbon wonder bike will pull in alot of hits and folks buying ad space want to sell stuff...

If someone treats you poorly because of anything aside from your personality or character they are a douche bag and you should tell them that.

Then go ride and have fun on your bike... whatever it cost.

Rob's right about telling you your opinion. Wink  and he's spot on about the rest.  Who gives a crap what you ride.  Just ride and wear a helmet. Smiley

Nailed it.  Especially if it's a shop owner on an E-bike. Wink

I'm poor folk and I am proud of my POS bikes. It has more miles than I care to think about and runs great. I also can't afford the best and newest thing. I could care less and can hang with most people. Not speed wise but technically I have that covered. I would be happy to go ride with you on any of my POS bikes. Enjoy your ride and look at it like this you are out having fun and are hooked on something that makes you smile and also clench your butt cheeks when it goes wrong.

I drive an old, beat up '05 F-150 too.

Gives me more free time and money to enjoy riding my supermodel gf also.

Hey, everybody's got their own values in life.   Smiley

Something I've noticed about cyclists in general: Either a D bag, or really a cool person. Who cares what other people think dude, just have fun.

yea just ride, let your skill do the talking. In terms of skill, I am a poor folk, so people definitely laugh at me. But at least I have a sh*t eating grin on my face the whole time!

AlternativeFacts...everyone just hates 29ers

On a more serious note I find it fairly affordable to buy old obsolete 26ers with high bb's, long chain stays, short top tubes and non boosted hubs.  This results in strange looks from the 29er crowd and the 27.5 super enduro crowd.  I like riding what were once great bikes that are now frowned upon and #BANNED from legendary trails like Fish Stix.  Ride what you like and ride often, if people give you crap just give it right back... 29ers still suck  Wink

Honest, I think most of those people who look down on someone because they haven't spent $5000+ on a bike just lack the skill to actually ride it properly and slowly become jealous.

Sucks for them though. Everyone else is having fun riding what they got while they're missing out on the 29" carbon high horses they ride.

I agree that magazines don't review entry level bikes....that question was actually asked in a recent issue of MTB Action magazine in the Letters to the Editor section. The magazine responded by saying many vendors will not provide them bikes to review unless they agree to test their $9K+ top line models.

That's because they're like large home builders.

There's little or no profit in selling smaller houses.

That's why when you're buying one, the salesperson always looks at you cross eyed and with a certain amount of concealed disgust (as if you're some kind of failure), and when you take delivery you had better look at the details of construction very carefully. Because the just out of college superintendent was never at your house during construction making sure the subs were doing their jobs properly. Much bigger fish to fry. And ultimately, besides the bs dog and pony show that's what it's all about.

Haha, try riding a 17 year old bike...

I do get some weird looks. But then again I snagged it for 150 bucks and have put maybe 200 into it, so it doesn't bother me at all. Plus it's generally the guys that can't ride for crap, so when I hear them blaming their $6k bike I just laugh.

I actually really love my two bikes. I bought entry Leavel, and was able to afford a mountain bike and a road bike. I was a little freaked about my road bike having Claris 8 speed. But then found that the wider range helped my style of riding. And I got the same frame as the higher end model. And my wife and I both have Electra Townies for Beach and Greenway riding. There was a dude on the greenway who said I needed a mountain bike because it would be lighter and easier to ride. Oh if he only knew. Another thing that nobody reviews in the lower priced range. Is wheels. Makes you think you have to spend a grand for wheels. Undecided

I've always been poor folk guy with nice bike. Started back in the 80's and always have tried to get a better ride every 4-5 years. Gone from bare bones HT to super bike FS. I couldn't have done any of my deals without a STRONG relationship with my  various LBS's over the years. I always make sure they know how much they count. Beers and tips for great efforts always part of my plan.
That said, ride what you have between your legs and enjoy!!

Scott Genius all day.  Cool

Yeah, if I would have spent a few hundred more. I could have gotten a bike with upgraded components. But I didn't do any real research, and the shop didn't try to sell me anything else. And at the time, saving a couple hundred was lodged in my mind. That was the first bike I got in 30 years, that I didn't go better. But good enough. I have done some upgrades though, handlebars, seat, bottle cages, really hip flat pedals. I turned into a flat pedal freak😵😉

Sometimes I'll check out the bikes at Target and for a few minuets think my "poor folk bike" is top of the line!
