Chiggers not bad here at Snowshoe, but these little biting flies are just as bad. They bit me 2 weeks ago and I just stopped itching and scratching. I haven't seen any ticks.

And that's one reason why I always take a knife with me when out in nature(or anywhere appropriate). It's the best tool to dig a tick out with, as long as you don't accidentally shave your legs Shocked

Chiggers/ticks are also the reason I only wear shorts when cycling

What!  I wear shorts at every opportunity.  They go well with my other preferred wardrobe choices, a t-shirt and flip flops.

Everytime I go to the mountains in the summer I end up with chigger bites. They love the sweaty bits!

Ok, I hate sharing all my secrets. But for all you sufferers out there, this should help.

Get some of this at REI.

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

After you get out of the shower, dry off lightly. Then put in on all over like you would lotion. Or just on your legs if that's the problem area. Make sure your hands are damp and you wont need a lot. Just a light application. After application, there's no smell and its not greasy so you'll never know it's there.

If you don't shower do the same thing, but dampen your hands before you apply. It makes application easier.

If you don't want anything in your clothes or gear, also pick up some of this.

Spray your clothes (socks, shoes, etc..) or gear with it once a season. It's good through a few washings. Chiggers, ticks or mosquitoes touch your clothes, they die and fall off.

It's also available in aerosol form at wally world sporting good dept. for a little less. The active ingredient is permethrin.

Perfectly safe stuff if used as directed.

That stuff reminds me of Calamine lotion, which is great to use on a tick bite or a poison ivy rash. Also, anyone else put white vinegar or apple cider on mosquito bites? Really helps in a pinch

Nope.

It's 20% picaridin. It's a synthetic derivative of black pepper.

Look it up.

It keeps insects from recognizing you as a food source. Doesn't melt your plastic like deet, either.

Apple Cider????Always trying to sneak in to the Craft beer scene. But drinking craft beer seems to draw them. They even hate bud in the insect world
