Outer Banks - Off Road

I'm headed to OBX this Summer and wondering if anyone had any experience/suggestions on where to go offroad?  I hear there are some beaches that only have that type of access.   Much of the area seems closed during the summer months for off road traffic, but some remains open.

Also, if anyone has a set of traction mats that I could rent or borrow, I'd appreciate it.  I don't see the investment of purchasing them for $130+ for what may be a one time use.

Carova is your best bet without a permit. It is the north point of NC 12 past duck and corolla. Cant miss it drive north till the road runs out. You can also drive on the Hatteras National Seashore with a permit for a 10 day 50 dollar permit. You do not need traction mats. Just bring wood and a shovel. If you are worried buy cheap floor mats. Someone will pass you with a bad ass ride always willing to pull you out if needed.

I took my outback to Carova.  No issues... until I let my wife drive and she stalled us in some soft/deep sand.  It wouldn't have been a problem but she basically slammed the brakes into the soft/deep sand so we had no momentum.  Momentum is your friend.  Took all of 5 mins to get out... a few quick shovels and I was off on my way.  Didn't need any help.  I drove almost up to the Va border and back.  Cut some 2x6 planks to use as traction Matt's.  Bring a small beach shovel and get a snatch strap in case you do need to get pulled or just wait for the local authorities who continuously patrol the area.

Air down your tires to widen the contact patch. It'll greatly increase your traction and keep you more on top of the sand, rather than digging into it. Also, it's very helpful if you know where you tow points are on the front and rear of your vehicle, so if you get stuck, there's no guessing game if someone pulls you out.
