Bike Recommendations

I've been out of the sport for 15 years or so and I am looking to buy a new bike.

Full suspension, $3000 or less preferably.

I've considered Trek Fuel EX and Giant Trance so far. I want an all around bike that can handle Charlotte trails and occasional WNC trails. Any other recommendations? Where, what, how, etc.?

Thanks

There's a great deal on a 2016 Jet 9 RDO in the marketplace.  If that fits you size wise, I'd highly recommend you take a look at it.  You'd be getting a ton of value at their current asking price.

I agree with this - except the fact that niners have had a history of frame issues.

I've ridden the fuel, remedy, trance, and anthem.  For $3000 or under I would recommend the Anthem and Trance (Anthem is by far all you need around here, and will handle the "easier" stuff in WNC).

If you're around Belmont go see Mills at South Main Cycles, I think they have both an Anthem and Trance as part of their demo fleet.

Look into the Santa Cruz Tallboy 3 (29er) or 5010 (27.5er) with the NX 1x11 drivetrain!  Once you ride one, I doubt you will be happy with any other bike.  You wont be dis-appointed.

My *personal* opinions on the big brands...

Santa Cruz - you typically get decent components w/ maxxis tires.  Their VPP suspension is excellent as well.  Santa cruz has well refined bikes in my opinion and you wont be itching to change components after buying the bike.

Giant - Known as the "best bang for your buck" brand.  You typically get higher grade components at lower price points.  I think you'd be happy with a new Giant.

Trek - Decent bikes, but I'm not the biggest fan of bontrager components & tires.  I feel like they sneak in heavy components on lower end bikes.  They also have proprietary RE:Aktiv rear shocks which I dont care for.

Specialized - Similar to trek.  Well developed nice bikes, but I feel like the prices keep creeping up and they are loosing the "good deal" flair.  I do like the specialized branded components over Bontrager/trek though.

Sincerely,
Santa Cruz Fan Boy... Cheesy Grin

For what its worth...  I agree Niners are worth looking into.  I've been riding a 2014 Jet 9 Carbon for over 3 years, which isn't much different from the RDO mentioned above.  I haven't had a single issue with the frame and love my bike.  Only 1 minor niggle is occasional bottom bracket squeek when dirt gets into it, due to their use of the press fit bottom bracket adapter.  I've replaced the rear carbon triangle once, but it was due to an unfortunate close encounter with a rock.  And Niner was very fair with me by offering a discount on replacing it, even though it was not a defect.  I know a lot of others who ride their frames, love them and have been treated fairly if/when any issue occurred.  I wouldn't hesitate buying another Niner.

No doubt, there are a lot of great bikes to be had for your price range.  The ones you're looking at are really sweet.  I'd highly recommend taking advantage of any demo's available to find what feels best to you.  Its an exciting time to be getting back into the sport.  Welcome back and happy trails!

Dont be turned off by brands outside of the big 4-5...

Companies like Marin, YT, Commencal, etc. offer some nice bikes with good spec for very reasonable prices.

The best thing to do is go to a few local shops and throw a leg over a bunch of different types of bikes... Full suspensions, hard tails, short travel, long travel, 29er, 27.5, ... This will get you the best idea of what bike fits your needs.

My 0.2  is folks often buy too much bike for their needs because the industry tells you that you have to have a 6" enduro bike to be "cool".

Do you really need 4-5" of travel for Charlotte? Do you even need full suspension?

Buy the bike that fits the riding you will be doing most of the time. If you plan on an occasional trip west to Dupont, Pisgah, etc. a 120mm bike will get the job done and then some but wont be a burden on the flat and tighter trails in Charlotte.

Don't we all.  Unfortunately their is no such thing.  You will have to make sacrifices 1 way or another between a XC bike vs a Trail bike.

Lots of great brands out their. Best thing to do is hit a large Demo event and ride as many as you can.  When you find the one you really can't live without then you will know you got the right 1.  Or hit up some of the local bike shops for weekend rentals and spend some saddle time on the trails with them.

Been getting some mean reviews. Look into the Specialized Diverge gravel bike. I've ridden most of the local trails and Ridge line in WNC on my gravel style bike. Much different experience

Okay I'll throw in my 2-cents...  After more than ten years since my last new bike purchase, I finally pulled the trigger on a new bike last October.  My choice was a '16 Specialized Camber Carbon Expert 650b.   With 130mm of travel and laid back geometry, it makes for what I'd call an almost perfect trail bike for the Charlotte area.... heck anywhere for that matter.

Granted a HUGE jump from what was popular in 2006.  I'm coming off of a '06 Cannondale Rush 2000 with a Carbon Lefty/Fox RP23 and that wacky XT shifter brake combo that Shimano had out at that time.  The Rush had a long top tube and what seemed to be a low bottom bracket.  Plus lets not forget 26" wheels.

Heck, I was so out of the loop, I've skipped the 29" movement altogether and when right for the 27.5.  I'm 5'8" so I think the 27.5 wheels suit me just fine (especially since I've only ever rode 26").  Now with dropper post, 1X11 drivetrain and suspension technology that blows my mind I couldn't be happier.  Like others have mentioned.... take some demos out and take you're time.

Big shout out to the Specialized Camber though.... I'm smitten!  See all of the Camber models ranging from $1900 to $8500 (with various wheel sizes) here...

I just came across the Tallboy in a review. I may give that a demo.

Went ahead and got a rack and helmet today so I could demo some bikes...

Thanks for all the responses guys. Keep em coming!

I've got a Tallboy 2 which is a bit shorter travel than the current Tallboy 3 and it is a great bike for around these parts.  Mine is a carbon frame so I got a bit higher grade components with my build but agree that overall Santa Cruz has great bang for the buck.  I love the VPP suspension also.

As long as geometry feels right get whatever you feel fits the bill.  A solid hardtail is all you need around here.  I agree though to go with bang for buck.  I got an Airborne Griffin which is a 650B+ setup that sells direct to customer for a killer deal and IMO is perfect for here.  Aggressive xc hardtail MTB with a bit more travel on big wheels.  At the end of the day get what feels right for you and enjoy. I have to disagree. Look at the Scott Spark or Genius. Both have Twin Lock remote suspension control. Full suspension, limited suspension or full lock out for that hard tail feel. My Genius is more bike than I need in Charlotte, but a click of the remote and it is just right for any trail. And when I ride anywhere that gets rowdy I have The Tool for the job.

Check out Travis at Live It Extreme in Mooresville. Go for a test ride. You'll love it!

Ok had to chime in since it's too wet to ride. I built up a Trek Fuel Ex 29 and absolutely love the bike. Custom build but rode the 29.0 and thought it was great too in stock configuration. The stuff Ibis has been putting out has been fantastic and the Ripley seems to hit the sweet spot for geometry and suspension for around here. Last two I'd throw out there would be a Pivot Mach 429 or a Yetti SB 5.  Whatever you decide have fun and use it often!

Thirded.  I have a Hightower that I love.  A Tallboy would probably be a better fit for CLT, but the new VPP pedals amazingly well.

I read this a little differently I guess.  I think that most current 120-140mm travel bikes are built for exactly this kind of scenario?  But then again... I loved the Trek Remedy when I demoed it and there is nothing XC about that bike.  You don't need "that much bike" around here though and that much bike on a lot of Pisgah trails would be dialed in but not necessary either.

Niner is a great value right now.  Santa Cruz is another great bike to consider since you are already looking to drop a considerable amount of money.  I have a Tallboy with a 120mm front fork that feels at home here and in WNC.  I agree with others though, at this price point there are plenty of really good bikes to choose from.  Some of the negative comments about certain brands sound like broad generalizations.

Yup.  I also own a Scott Genius.  I hate riding it around charlotte.  I got it thinking it would be good for everything.  Feels like way too much bike around here.

The sacrifice I was refering to is going to be between the Headtube angle and the bike weight.  XC 70 degree and 20 pound bike :  Trail  66 degree 26 pound bike

You can get something in the middle and try to get the best of both worlds but you're making sacrifices one way or another.  Just my opinion though you are free to disagree.  My feeling will not be hurt.

I've owned two giant Trances from 2014 until now and I've been absolutely pleased and at times blown away by what the bike can do (both of mine have been the advanced carbon frames with the "1" level build).  I mainly ride LKN state park, WWC and BYT locally but I also do a heavy amount of pisgah, wilson creek, Beech Mountain, Bailey Mountain, and Windrock.

I've been able to send my Trance as big as I want in Pisgah and the bike parks.  I recently put a fox 36 at 150mm of travel on my trance and that has opened up another level of stiffness and about a .5 degree slacker head tube angle for the steep stuff.  I rode the Pro GRT course at Windrock without problems with the Fox 36, it's a great setup.

The 67 degree head angle is also just about perfect for the trails in charlotte, it's definitely not too slacked out.  the 140mm of rear suspension is also a nice sweet spot and I'll use my shock in trail mode to keep up with friends on xc bikes at LKN state park.

In short, buy the Trance and proceed to ride the crap out of it everywhere  Wink

It feels like a lot of people forgot he said "$3000 or less" and I assume that means new, which is including tax etc.

Think about what you want to do on the bike and how you want to ride?  Fast? Racing?  Jumps?  Climbs?  Downhill or Enduro?  All of the above?  Just cruising in the woods with friends?

Is warranty and local service important?  Do you want to support a local shop, or order on-line?  All manufacturers have different levels of warranty coverage - read the fine print too.

I started out wanting a trail bike with 140mm of travel, and ended up buying a 100mm XC bike after riding several different bikes to see what I liked.

I demoed a high $$$$ ($10k but I wanted to see what the "best" felt like) "long and slack" bike with carbon everything, DW link suspension, and came away....baffled.  It didn't seem to do anything that I wanted.  Felt like I was riding a school bus it turned so slowly.  It was very cool though, and would have impressed friends and drained my bank account.

I ended up on a Trek Top Fuel 8 because it fit my budget and offered what I wanted to try: XC suspension and geometry. I liked the idea of 4 Trek stores within an hour of my house and their frame warranty.  I love it.  It's not carbon, kind of heavy at about 28lbs, but I got a deal on it as a new leftover 2016.  At times I wish I had gotten a lightweight carbon hardtail just to see what riding a featherweight bike is really like, but I'm an old fart so it's nice to have some suspension in the back.  I ride mostly XC style trails (i.e. everything around Charlotte) and some local races to try to motivate me to stay in shape.

People ride and enjoy every kind of bike there is.  Some even go fast on some pretty old equipment.  I remember watching a youtube video from the single speed races at Renni last winter, and a guy was running up front on a late 1990's cannondale 26er.  My son has turned 54 minute laps at Sherman on a 10-year old Gary Fisher that was too small for him but he loved the bike so he could ride it well.

Ride as many bikes as you can, and get what YOU want, can afford, and will enjoy.  Maybe start by trying at least a trail bike with more travel and an XC bike to see how much suspension you want, then narrow it down to mfg and geometry, warranty and local support.

There are TONS of great bikes out there today, and many good recommendations here.

This is spot on.  Rode with a buddy the other day at WWC who rides a fully rigged single speed 29er...and he was smoking my as$.  Just to put things in perspective.  I'm a believer that the more you spend over 2k...the more diminishing returns there are.

It feels like a lot of people forgot he said "$3000 or less"

Budget is key, and $3000 is a perfect budget to go out and get a very capable brand new bike these days.  (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)  $2700 brand new with fox suspension (150mm fork 140mm rear), Shimano drivetrain, Shimano brakes, and dropper post.

I agree with Will... That Giant Trance is a nice bike for the price point.  So is the Anthem SX (with less travel)...
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

With that said, I mentioned the Specialized Camber earlier in this thread.... A nice trail bike (650b) with 130mm of travel.  Specialized also makes 4 versions of the Camber under the $3K price point (here are two for $2500)...
Camber Comp 29 (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
Camber Comp 650b (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

Again, Even at the $3000 price point and below, there are a bunch of great bikes out there.... demo as many as you can, and you'll find something you like.

The Specialized Camber in a 29 inch wheel is a great bike for around here and the 2017's have a little slacker head tube angle that works well for some part time Pisgah riding.  They have recently discounted the Comp Carbon models and we could get you into one for your $3000 budget out the door.  Bike originally retailed for $3800.

Here's a link for color choices and parts spec.
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

And we have demos at the shop to "try before you buy".

$3000 out the door for a carbon 29 trail bike with 120mm travel, 1x11 and dropper?.... sounds like a pretty sweet deal!!!  Shocked

I like the monster green color on that one.  The Turner is always a safe bet too.  I've owned a RFX and Sultan and both were great bikes.

Definitely try before you buy!

And my recommendation is biased, but if you want a super playful and capable bike that comes well built out of the box, and will leave you a lot of room in your budget for upgrades or buying your significant other flowers, I would recommend the Kona Honzo. It is a 29er hardtail, but it rocks! Just took it to Dupont this weekend and what a blast it was. You don't need a full squish bike unless "you have to have it." I have the Honzo AL/DL, but the AL would be just fine, and I know there is one in stock and ready to take home at The Cycle Path. I think it is like $1500ish...so lots of room in your budget for personalized upgrades as you see fit.

Get a bike with a dropper post or put it in your budget for upgrades. There are so many good bikes in the $3K ish range. Have fun with the demos!

There is no such thing as too much bike.  A fun bike is fun everywheres

Just Remembers:
29erz are for dirt roadies (sorry KevinB, but you know its true  Smiley)
27.5erz are wanna be 26erz

Ima have to disagree.  Anything over 4" travel is a waste.

29erz rule around here!!  Look at the milez of paved dirt.

Cue the Anne Springs trail debate in 3-2-1... Wink

On a more serious note, it depends on your riding style. I'm more of a 'dirt roadie'. (xc racer).  I really prefer a lighter quicker handling bike. I've ridden several longer travel bikes and have come away unimpressed- especially given the terrain in this area.

In your shoes, I'd test a few different bikes out and see what you like best.

You're making an awful lot of assumptions in that statement, cowboy

Bringing back another old theme- It ain't about the size of your Schwartz, it's how you handle it.

Are 29ers to compensate for the 4" and under problem???  (Step 23 of how to be a Mountain Biker... (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links))

Not sure we want to know how you handle it.  Mark may want to know, hes into that kinda thing

Mark definitely delivers on shop taking care of those who buy bikes from him.  Basically what I'm saying is if you buy a bike from him he will service it and even upgrade it for free!  Forever!!!

On a serious note: His shop and service are awesome and he deserves a lot of credit for being consistent in this.

I don't doubt it. I've been offered a good deal on a trance 2 at two different shops close to me. Both shops have it as their last trance and just happen to be my size. Not sure whether or not to pull the trigger.

Depends on what size you're looking for.  I have Camber Expert Carbon 29er in a Large frame at about $3800 but that would bust your budget.  If you're a medium I can still get you into one of the Camber Comp Carbon 29er's for about $3000 out the door.  I know InTheBush is enjoying his!  Smiley

All I can say is save yourself some grief and money and visit a bike shop represented here.
They can put you on the right bike the first time.
