Same here. There is a reason I drive for 2 1/2 hours to get there.

I definitely gave suggestions on a trail that could use major renonvations and one that could use a reroute.

Some of the trails that just go straight down the hill through bike deep ruts in places make sense to rerouted.  Think about how much longer of a descent you could get...  What if Upper Black contoured around instead of going straight down a rut, that descent would be super long.  For all that climbing you could triple your descent time with a reroute.  Not that I suggested that, but just saying...  Shocked

I recommended that Schoolhouse Gap in the Wilson Creek area have a reroute of the section that is a large ditch going straight down the ridge.  If Terra Tek Trails or another contractor could get a hold of that hillside that would be epic!  We've also got to remember that many of mountain biking's detractors point to the sediment deposited into National Forest streams from these trails that have turned into rain carrying ruts.  I think we should absolutely be advocating for the worst erosion offenders to be re routed or fixed so the trail will actually be there 20 years down the road.

On the question about which trail could use a major renovation, I mentioned Holly Springs (Sinkhole) in the Wilson Creek area.  Recent illegal dirt bike usage has rutted that trail up.  I put that trail down based on recommendations from my friends who do trail maintenance in the Wilson Creek area and live in the high country.

Might get blasted by some but I agree with this...

Black is a &^&^ show in places and what used to be "gnar" is now just a gully with dozens of go-arounds widening the trail. A reroute or major renovation would be nice to add A) more trail and more descending, and B) keep the forest healthy and prevent runoff into streams, etc. Folks lobbying to keep bikes off trails use this argument often...

The new Spencer Branch is a good example. They re-routed a fall line trail that was a blow out gully (although super fun to ride) and have made a much longer descent that has some nice flow to it. It sucked at first but is starting to get its teeth back. Give it a few more years and it will be rowdy AF! im sure.

Same goes for  Lower Black, Fletcher Creek, etc. These trails were reworked into smooth dirt "greenways" but are starting to revert back to nice techy singletrack. It just takes time.

I wonder if Wilson gets used enough to justify money being used to rehab/re-route the trails? S. Pisgah certainly does...

I did not want to stir the pot, but was thinking the same thing.  I can't believe sometimes how fast the trails up there are changing.  I enjoyed Trace last weekend too, but its amazing how much more teeth it has gotten in a very short amount of time. Trace, Upper and Middle Black, Avery Creek, Yellow Gap...  Just a matter of time before something will have to be done before the NF service forces a change like it or not.  I would like to be able to still ride there in 15 or 20 years personally.

I also mentioned Schoolhouse Ridge. I have ridden this trail a lot recently and although it doesn't really seem to be getting much worse (it's already down the bedrock in a lot of areas) it could probably be improved. I actually like it the way it is but given that there are only a handful of legal trails in Wilson Creek it could be made a bit more user friendly to attract a wider audience. I ran in to a Dad with his teenage kids there a few weeks back, they were about to drop in to the DH gnar... he was trying to get his kids in to mtn biking... that will probably be the last time they ever trust him!

I just rode upper black yesterday. They already re-worked the part right before hickory knob and took most of the bomb holes out. It's running good right now.
