I received the following message about a new app. I have not used the app nor do I know anything about it, so if you use it, please do so at your own risk.

Hi Emily,

My name is Riley Tronson, and I came across your mountain bike club online. We just launched an awesome app for mountain biking and other outdoor activities called Diverge that I thought you would enjoy.

Diverge is an interactive trail map and activity tracker for outdoor enthusiasts. With Diverge, you can record your activities, see your progress on the trail map and compete with friends to be the first to record new trails and earn First Ascents.

Diverge is available for free on the App Store ( (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)).

It would be great if you could record a few of your favorite trails in Charlotte and share the app with other members of your group who might be interested! If you have any questions about Diverge, please let me know.

Regards,
Riley Tronson

So they emailed me back to get feedback so I just asked them how their app differs from strava/map my ride/etc. Below is what he says (if nothing else he seems like a nice guy who is pretty excited about his product):

Emily,

Thanks for posting about Diverge on your message boards!

That's a great question. We have a lot of really awesome features we want to build into Diverge and in its current form it can be tough to see the difference between us and the other apps. Strava and Map my Ride are more focused on the fitness part of your ride and we are more focused on the navigation aspect. The bread and butter of Diverge is the trail map. If you zoom around you'll start to notice that the detail of the map is much better than any of the other mapping apps. We believe this detail will translate into a much better user experience for riders.

Like the fitness apps we also have a tracker on Diverge which allows us to do three really awesome things. 1) We can show your current track overlaid on the trail map so you can see where you have gone and figure out where you want to go. 2) We keep track of cool stats such as mileage, elevation gain, ascending time and distance. 3) The tracker is also how we build the trail map. It makes it really easy for people to contribute important trail information to the outdoor community. All people have to do, is use the tracker and we take care of the rest to build the trail map. This doesn't mean you can only use the tracker for trails, it can be your go to tracker for morning runs, paddle boarding, skiing and other activities.

We are super excited on where Diverge is and even more excited in what we can build into it. We want to make something amazing!

-Riley

Hmmm. A lot of overlap with Pinkbike's Trailforks app. I used it for the first time a couple of weekends ago in Santa Cruz. The really neat thing about that app was it had an arrow showing which way you were facing. So when I came to a busy intersection I could just rotate until I was facing the correct route and be sure I was going the right way. Trailforks allows for the removal of bootleg trails from their maps though, so there were quite a few times when I was on my own.

I'm always down for playing with a new app to see what it's best for. I'll give it a go.

So I guess the app is currently like early adopters of Waze: not a lot out there. It has parts of USNWC, a few greenways, and not much else local. Trailforks and mtbproject both had incentive/points programs to get people to map trails to the app. Here, if you record the trail they credit you in the trail details. Also doesn't seem to differentiate between hiking (Crowders Mtn), singletrack, and greenway. Not feeling it.

Thanks for looking into it. I don't use any apps on my phone when riding so I don't know much about any of them.
