When rain closes the trails or for the beach..

I picked a couple of gravelly road bikes for me and the wife to ride when the trails are closed and whatnot.
In proximity to WWC are there any safe unpaved roads where we can get in about 15 miles without needing to do a lot of laps?

The parkway loop at the WWC never closes...a few laps on it when the trails are closed is a pretty good option.

Yep.. I ride that a good bit when the trails are closed.  I am looking to get off the mountain bike, stretch my legs and hit the unpaved road (or low traffic paved road) where I can get some short 60-90 minute runs without resorting to the business park during the week.

I am interested in longer rides as well.

Many years back I used to ride the C&O canal towpath from Seneca lock up to White's Ferry, cross the river into VA then head north into the mountains towards Taylorstown before crossing the Potomac back into MD at Point of Rocks and heading south back down the tow path.  That was about a 30+ miler with some fun in the mountains at the 1/2 way point.  It was a good mix of dirt/gravel/chip&tar/asphalt.
The only part of that route that I hated was the mile or two I had to ride on HWY 15 after crossing into VA before crossing over HWY 15 and heading up into the mountains.  Nothing makes you feel smaller than a loaded 18wheeler blowing past you @ 60+ MPH on a single lane highway.

Here's a good resource for all of the gravel roads in NC.

Good luck stringing together anything more than a few hundred yards anywhere near Charlotte proper.  From what I've seen you need to go into the Love Valley, Wilkesboro, or Wilson's creek area, or out into forest service roads in the Uwharries or out near the Smokies.  I was able to piece together about 11 miles of gravel goodness out in Rowan county, but that took about 30ish miles of road to get it done.  NC is on a mission to pave or chip seal all of the roads, which is a shame since gravel bikes are starting to be a thing.

Also, if you're willing to drive, you can check out the New River Trail. 1:50ish from Charlotte.  I ground out 100 miles up there yesterday.

Thanks... I'd have thought there was something around Stanly / Mt Holly.

I live in Gastonia and wanted something similar, the best option I've found is Kings Mountain.  The roads there are a lot less traveled than anywhere in the area; and if you want even less traveled roads you can ride around the park.

There are some decent gravel roads in the park too; but there are also some paved roads that you'll be lucky to see a single car on - e.g. garner creek, houser, rockhouse, even antioch to the main park road are low traveled roads, plus the park is 25mph.
