Ride clipless you will crash...

Ride flats you will crash...

Neither is better in any situation while riding singletrack... just different. Pick one and ride...

Now for DJ, DH, BMX flats are nice only because you WILL crash doing that stuff and being able to bail quickly is nice.

I know fast folks who are just fast... not because of pedals. They ride alot...

I agree with everyone who says it's all personal preference and it will take some experimenting to figure out what you like best.  I started with flats, went to a pair of Shimano M530 SPD which were pretty good but ultimately settled on Eggbeaters.  I prefer my feet staying settled and the eggbeaters tend to have more float which are easier on my surgically repaired foot.  I've never had an issue coming out of them.  I've actually considered trying flats again but the cheapo in me doesn't want to spend the money on shoes to use with them.

How so?  I've been thinking about trying to get used to flats this winter.  Nice seeing you at Cyclofest!

Hey Jason;

Not pre-loading your suspension off a lip with flats will likely result in losing your pedals in the air.

Since switching back to flats, I have to pay more attention to my take offs.

Saying somebody rides fast because their pedals, is sort of like saying somebody drives fast on I-77 because of their car..

Maybe they're drunk, got a death wish or something..

I've ridden all three extensively (clips, flat, and clipless).
They all do the job. One maybe better than the other depending upon your bike, riding style and where you ride.
Flats are generally the least expensive option. But if you ride spikes, be prepared to tear your shin up occasionally.

I do have flats with spikes mounted on my bike, but Scott and friends in Italy always told me how better is to ride spd's. I admit my fear is to fall like an idiot because I was not able to release the feet! It is a primal fear LOL but at the same time I have heard and read from you guys of the better distribution of the effort while pedaling. Anyway I am not a racer, I am very quiet and not too technical (as a matter of fact it would be nice to have the TB's offering a course for people like me that wants to improve their skills). So I wanted your opinion and got the message that is something personal like anything else. I will try them, for sure. I will buy one of those shoes that will work weel with or without the cleats. If you have any input about this I would greatly appreciate!

I would buy a cheaper pair of shoes over an expensive shoe. I have a pair of Sidi clip in shoes I ride XC with and a cheap pair of Lake shoes I ride DH with and I like each one equally. Just a thought.

About 5 years ago I made the switch to clipless. Tried going back this spring and after one good whack on the shin have put the flats back on the shelf. The thing about clipless is to remember that for the most part there is nothing new - 99% of the difficulty is in your head. One bit of advice I got was to start out on a nice piece of flat grass and just ride around. The grass serves to provide a bit of extra resistance to the pedaling effort which in turn will make the bike feel more stable. Of course the side benefit is that it also provides a softer landing should you you fall on your ass. Smiley Once you are rolling around try clipping and unclipping while rolling; and once you start feeling more confident introduce some slower turns that will have you balancing more. Generally this will get boring after an hour and I'll bet you are out on the trail in no time. FYI once get up to speed make a point of pedaling full circles - pushing down as well as pulling up - I find that this is the real benefit you get from clipless pedals, especially in the acceleration phase. Take your time, have confidence in your skills going in, and as always have fun.
Cheers

I have been riding flats for more years than I can count... I have NEVER smacked my shins once... not once.  I HAVE NO SHIN SCARS.  Now.. the back of my lower leg... mid-calf down to my ankle... is scared all to hell. I feel like that could be prevented w/ higher socks.
Ride WTF ever feels comfortable... I have done both clipless an flats...  seriously the only reason I switched was because I HATED the clipless shoes.

Makes sense.  I tried flats once or twice and when I got airborne (one small table top and one drop) my bike dropped away from me like a lead weight.  Well maybe not that bad but you get what I mean?  I know there is a technique to riding with them but it sounds like it would be useful for me to learn.

Pros and Cons for each.  I ride clip less but I only ride one MTB.  The other bike is a road/CX bike with the same pedals.  We sell both at the shop. Smiley

Now on to more important topics like E-bikes and leaf blowing which will both be happening at Fisher this weekend. Smiley

One thing to think about, if you ever ride in the mountains and ride clipped in make sure your shoes are suitable for creek crossings.... Its super tricky in those stiff shoes with no grippy bits.

Maybe I missed it, but for me, it's all about the cleat, not the pedal.   Shimano makes the best multi-release cleat. See link (The SPD SH56 I think? ) (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

Ultimately, I prefer to ride clipped in.  Its a no brainer when riding at all our local tracks where you know where everything is.  I know when to get on the gas in advance of the obstacle so i don't lose momentum.   That's when most newb clipped crashes happen.  You lose all momentum and even though you try, you can't unclip and over/down you go.

But with the easy out cleats, and my pedal spring tension set on easy, I am relatively comfortable riding  anywhere clipped in because I know i can jerk my foot up at anytime and the shoe will release from the pedal. Some people would hate that, but i love it.  I still feel connected to the bike and i can crank/pull up with my foot when I need extra power and it stays clipped in.

I believe that when riding clipped, when you approach a difficult area, or tough climb, or similar you have to either decide to hit and go all in for it and keep the rpm's up and don't stall, or unclip/prep to unclip and hike around the obstacle.

BTW, if you are just riding mostly flat stuff, then going clipless is a no brianer.....do it.

A few tips for beginning clipee's, wear a combination knee and shin guard. Find some bike shorts with hip pads.  Add in some slim elbow pads and/or arm sleeve if you can.

My newb falling over clipped story.  I was flying downhill towards the creek where the steep ramoed bridge is at Ann Springs Greenway. This was like 8 years ago.  The bridge has a short but steep, like 4 feet ramp to get up on it.  I hit that ramp, however I was in a TALL gear and I lost all momentum.  I went down left.  Hard.  My head hit the rail, as me and my body went through/under it. my hip hit the edge of the ramp, i flipped upside down, and my bike got stuck on the rail and I was dangling under it.  All in all it wasn't that bad, but everytime i see that bridge (which now has a different railing system) i can assure you i am in the right gear and I have plenty of momentum....you live, you learn.   I also fell due to being clipped in the rock garden not far from said Bridge....  All of this happened using the standard cleats, not the multi-release clips.

So I say get the clipless pedals.  Something cool.  Also, the clilp-less shoes are way better than flats.  They look the part as well.

My favorite clipless fall story occurred while BMX racing a couple of years ago. Think it was a State qualifier so it was pretty well attended with a variety of skill levels participating. I had been riding clipless for less than a year and was on the starting hill lined up for my moto.  The moto 2 or 3 ahead of me loads up in the gate and for one reason or another they hold the start, most likely to clear up a crash on the race course. As everyone starts to relax one guy, who is on the far right end, starts to unclip and looses his balance. In slow motion he falls on the guy to his left, who falls on the guy to his left etc etc. in a matter of 5 seconds or less all 8 guys in the gate are laying on the ground. Was pretty funny at the time (nobody was hurt) but the image has come to mind every time I get in a gate since. Always brings a smile and a couple of butterflies too. Smiley

Thank you all for the feedback. I will certainly try the Shimano SPD and see if I will love them as much as many of you do!
