I've never rode the Trail at South Mountain. So I have no idea how the terrain is. Could you ride a Gravel bike on the trail?

'Trails' are basically fire road.  One or two killer hills. You'd probably have to walk those. It's been years since I was there, but it's probably the same as it was then.

Though bikes are allowed on some of the trails, I would not consider them bike trails and wouldn't make a trip (of any length) to ride them. I might ride them some if they were across the street from my house. But there are too many outstanding trails in piedmont and western NC to make a trip there. I'm not beating on South Mtn State Park...it's beautiful. But it's not a legit destination trail for mtn biking IMO.

Pretty much fire roads and a little pavement on the very top. If you go don’t miss your turn by the tower like I did or it will be a long long day!

I was wondering if the trail was alright for the skinnier tires on a gravel bike

Yes, the trail tread would be great for a gravel bike.  Just be sure to have a big cassette on the back.

Most mountain bikers don't think much of anything but singletrack.  For me it is far different as I enjoy it all including the 18 miles of ridiculous hills up and down of South Mountain.  Love the getting out and away and not riding back and forth loops around the rec center or whatever.  It is an adventure to ride SM.

Very good point. There aren't too many of those trails because of property size limitations. But to ride off and cover an expansive territory is very appealing when it's available. That's part of what appeals to me about Uwharrie.
