I need stronger pedals

I've been using Times for years. However I've now broken two of them, both times it was from the pedal striking a rock. One side of the pieces of medal that hold the cleat is exposed so when it hits something hard just right, it snaps off. The way they are designed,  both sides are held in place by the same spring mechanism in the center so when one side breaks it renders the other side useless also. So I'm looking for something stronger and hardier. Something better protected and something where the two sides are independent of each other would be even better.

Shimano M520s...

They are cheap and damn near indestructible.

Ive had a set on a bike for well over 5 years. They've gone through creeks, been coated in mud, had more bashes on rocks, etc than I can count and they still work great.

Just put a little lube on em every now and then and you're set.

Any distinguishable differences between the 520's and XT's? I'm only seeing about a 35 gm difference in weight.

The 520's are good as I had a set I used for a couple of years.  I'm using eggbeaters now and beat the hell out of them with no issues.  While they aren't as cheap as the 520's they are user serviceable and I personally like the additional float I get over an SPD cleat.

+1 for the inexpensive and seemingly indestructible Shimano 520.  Sometimes it seems like I have broken everything on the bike except the pedals.  They meet the independent springs requirement too.  I have a spare set if you want to try them.

I used to be addicted to the Hokey Pokey but then I turned myself around.

Do what you like. Stop hating people for their riding habits and get back to hating them for their skin color, religion, politics, and sexual orientation.

It seems as if you need a lower profile pedal, to stop bashing into rocks. Flats would be good option. But I also agree about Shimano. If you want more float, you can get the multiple release cleat. Maybe look into shorter crank arms also

If you're looking for a trail pedal, IMO this is the best cost to value to weight choice. And they weigh about the same as 520's. With of course a cost premium. But they'll likely outlast a few bikes.

VP VX pedals are also great performers. I've got three sets of their trail pedals and have never had a problem (got them at a great discount). Work perfectly with Shimano cleats.

If you're looking for a pedal with no platform, I agree it's hard to beat the price and the performance of the 520's.

For me, the difference in stability between the trail and XC versions are quickly evident. My feet always seem more planted on the trail variety. And the small platform protects the mechanism somewhat.

this would be a good deal if you are looking for a wider platform

You're just too strong!  Back off, to mere mortal power and you won't have these problems.

I've had XTR clipless pedals (like these (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) ) on my Yeti and never had a problem since 2010.  As you know, i've been riding flats (like these  (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) ) for past 1 1/2 years on Yeti & SS and haven't had a problem.

But, then, as you know, I lack your power.  (There's a place in the world for shuttles up mountains in my world, I just haven't found them.)

Wait...you run clipless???  I figures you ran plastic flats with toe clips.  They go well with toobs and no drooper...

Thanks for the opinions everyone. Sounds like Shimano is the way to go. I'm going to borrow a pair and see how I like them before buying anything.

Of the normal SPD's 520's are for sure the way to go.  I like some of the others have mentioned prefer crank bros.  I like the greater level of float.  I run the candies for the small platform, but if you prefer a larger platform they also make the "mallet".  Just another option. Wink

There's a difference when doing the bearings or rebuilding. The 520's have a small plastic wrench you have to use. XT's and STAr's have to be installed with a hex wrench. 520 can use a pedal wrench, regular wrench or hex key to install
