Teen friendly MTB racing

My stepson has gotten really into mountain biking with me...he loves a ton of local courses..

WWC Academy is his hardest and least liked, but he liked carolina thread trail there and South loop; lake loop;
Sherman Branch is his favorite.
North Meck park is closest and he does well there

Anyways...he really wants to start racing.

Are their any winter race leagues for 2017/2018 (now through the winter) I could point him towards or sign up with him?

I know NICA has a league but it starts in March.
What about training, group rides of other teens, etc.?

thanks for the help guys!

Winter short track racing is coming...presented by s2finish racing every Sunday starting the last weekend in January. Most popular race series in charlotte, beginner friendly, great crowds, great intro to racing series.

A second vote for the Winter Short Track series.  My son enjoys riding and likes to race, but was discouraged by the lack of participants and depth in the youth classes at the Summer Series.  There just were not very many kids in the summer series and it discouraged him since the kids that were there were so much better than he was.  The Winter series seems to have a MUCH higher participation level with a lot more depth of ability.  He enjoyed it much more and he can't wait for this yrs series to start up.

In short, give the Winter Series a shot.  I think he'd greatly enjoy it! Wink

NICA practices start this week. If you’re interested in racing on a local NICA team, you need to be finding your local team and register now. If you have any questions feel free to call me. (704)277-1399

May be obvious, but have him ride the Winter Short Track course for a coupla loops at least once before doing a race. The loop isn't real hard but is certainly a workout at race pace. There is one up and over rock formation that get's everyones' attention - 'specially when tired. It's all good but he'll have lots more confidence having done a few pre-ride laps.

Late to the party, but I'd say looking into joining a NICA team and checking out the winter short track would be an awesome route for him.

With North Mack being your closest trail there are two potential teams in the area.  If he happens to go to Lake Norman Charter, we have a team there - otherwise there is a Composite team in the area he could join.  With the team he can start practicing and getting to know other riders his age.  The great part about NICA is that it isn't all about racing (students don't have to race to be part of the team) so until races start he can just have fun riding with the team.

The short track is a fun race and as mentioned, great youth participation there.
