Looking for an inexpensive rear derailleur

My son has been bitten hard by the MTB bug and we've been hitting some of the trails regularly the past few months.  This has me upgrading my '08 Raleigh XXIX SS to a 1×8 on a tight budget.  All I need to finish is a decent rear derailleur.  Looking for something along the lines of a long cage Deore.
Thanks

I have an old XT 8speed rear der that might fit the bill. I also have a set of SRAM ESP grips with a 9.0 or XO rear der with carbon cages (no pulleys though for some reason). I have a Tiagra med/long cage that might work too. I am very flexible on the worth of these things that clutter my shed. Shoot me an offer if interested, I can send pics tomorrow if you need.

A 9 speed der will work too. Just saying that because you may find more of them available. I just put a 9 on an old 7 spd cassette and it works perfectly (after some adjmt to the limit screws).
