Knee Pads?

After an unfortunate meeting with a tree (that resulted in a Superman style flight over the bike), I find myself once again with a skinned knee and counting myself lucky it wasn't much worse. But, this is the second time where my knee has been the primary point of contact in a crash. So:

1. How many of you are wearing knee protection riding the local trails? I tend to ride RRT (though, ironically, most of my spills have been elsewhere).

2. ANY recommendations for knee pads? Preferably under $75? I'm looking for something light and functional. I don't want a full on Enduro exoskeleton with bomb-proof knee and shin armor, just something that will provide reasonable protection for the type of riding you find around here.

I was look at the Alpine Stars and Fox Launch...

There are tons of versions of the launch...some basically neoprene sleeves and others the full on enduro pad you're trying to avoid.  I rarely wear knee pads around Charlotte unless it's cold and I want a pseudo knee warmer but truth be told there was a time I wore them out on every ride no matter what.  My favorite pads right now are the iXS Flow.  They are pretty minimalist but get the job done.  I tend to forget they are there while pedaling for hours in Pisgah.

I have transitioned to letting my face and arms absorb the blows...no need for knee pads! Cool

I got mine at REI at Carolina place mall.
They are by Fox.They pull on like a sock with a pad on the knee area and very comfortable.
I think they were 60 bucks

Yep, been there, done that..

Alpinestar Paragons here.
Well made and comfortable. Been using the same pair for two years. Come with a cool mesh bag to store them in and clean up easy with a damp cloth. My knee is 15" around and I wear a medium.

I hear the Fox launch enduros are decent, light weight knee pads as well.

They were like 40 bucks on Amazon.

I wear these. Minimalist, but do the trick.

I have been looking at the G-FORM knee pads and they don’t make large enough ones for me yet. I have contacted them about that. Haven’t heard anything back yet. Anyone have any time trying that brand out?

I've been using the G-form's for about a year now and have no complaints.

I wear the POC Air as well, but every time I ride.  I have field tested them several times and they work like a champ.  Never notice they are on when riding either.

Dakine Slayers were my pick.  I was tempted with the Alpinestars Paragons because of cost, but ended up with the Dakine pads.  From what I read, these two offer better ventilation than the iXs flows and fox pads.

After taking a crash and getting 14 stitches in my knee, all healed now, I have realized my need for knee pads.  I just bought G-Form knee pads, but have not had a chance to try them.  I hope they work out well.

I too have been looking into getting some knee pads now that I have ventured into Wilson's creek a couple time this year also with a few DuPont rides last year, Debating between the budget route of the Alpinestars Paragon and possibly going the TLD 5400 route or something similar...

I tend to end up right between L and XL due to my large thighs.

From experience, when I am not always small probability of something bad happening. I wear knee and elbow pads all the time. While chances are low accidents are bound to happen some day. I rather be ready when it does happen. For me, being prepared is well worth it. Had a wild wreck and got clipped by tree due to bar getting too close to tree...had a bad wreck and walked out woth no scratch on kneee but shin ate it good. Hot or cold ..gotten used to it and feels great having that safer factor.

Yep yep.  Troy Lee Design Speed knee sleeves for me.  Just rode Pisgah with them and they didn't bother me one bit. Except for the peace of mind I forget they are there. The Cycle Path in Davidson sells them for about same price as online.  Best to try them on first if you can. And soooooo ENDURO Wink
