I'm moving to Matthews in about a month and am excited to try some of your beautiful MTB trails.  It's way hotter in your area than I'm used to in the summer, what do you do the beat the heat and still MTB in the hot months?

ride when the sun comes up.

but seriously, i came from NJ ~3 years ago, you just get used to it. its always cooler on the road because of the breeze you create, but as long as you don't stop moving in the woods, it isn't too bad. i usually ride at noon. drink lots of water before and during. you'll be just fine.

Oh, now I get it.  I'm more of a bad biker than a bad ass, and more hard headed than a hard ass.   I'll probably just go at first light, if I can manage.

You get semi used to it but not really. It's only for a couple of months and after that the weather is pretty nice. Plus side is that it doesn't really get cold here. Basically I just suffer through the heat.

I ride earlier sometimes, sometimes I just ride whatever time and just deal with it, sometimes I ride a little slower or less long, I drink a lot of water and eat large amounts of very salty food after the ride...I don't like stopping during rides much anyway but like stopping even less when it's super hot. Sometimes I might get a little crabby but not nearly as much as when I'm hungry so I got that going for me. Basically just figure out what works for you.

so, i guess riding an e-bike with a built in solar &/or pedal assisted air conditioner would be out of the question.

Being a victim of the heat myself, I can say it’s not easy.  I tend to ride road a bunch more in the summertime.  Even then, I’ve got to get out early.  Other option is head to the mountains where it’s cooler.  That been said, summertime riding down here is better than no riding in the winter time up north.

Keys are hydration the day before you ride and keep moving.

If you ever think you’re suffering out there, feel free to PM me to ride.  I don’t sweat, so you can see what a suffer-fest looks like

Riding when it's still dark with lights, or when the sun is just coming up helps, but you've got to be ok with spiders. You're gonna meet a lot of them.
If I know I'm doing an afternoon ride in 98 degree heat, I make sure I drink a bunch of water all afternoon, then keep drinking on my ride. It's generally a little better in the shade while you're moving.

Locally, before 10 am is the best riding time in the heat of the summer.

The earlier the better.

Or go to the mountains. Uwharrie is not in the mountains.

I ride in my garage on zwift once in awhile during the summer.  Riding outside is no problem after that!

I've seen him in the heat dungeon on many rides... You can take the man out of Michigan but you cant take Michigan out of the man haha...

As everyone said its good to get out early or late and dress as light as possible... I normally ride in baggies/t-shirt but when its real hot its bibs and jersey so I wick sweat and stay cooler.

Also ditch the camelbak  and run a bottle if you can. Getting that pack off your back will help keep you cooler.

Also I typically don't ride at 100% effort and dial it back to stay cool. Heat illnesses (stroke and exhaustion) are no joke and if you aren't used to the Southern climate it will catch up to you quickly and can be dangerous. I was born and raised in this climate and you never really get used to the heat/humidity... but you do start to tolerate it a little more easily.

Drink water like its your job too...

And if you are dumb enough (like me) to still occasionally ride in the middle of the afternoon this time of year this cannot be said enough.  A good friend of mine lives in Arizona where the temperatures hover in the low 100s this time of year and the heat doesn't impact like it does here when he visits and we ride.  Not saying it is not as dangerous but the high heat and humidity combo we have here can really destroy your ride if you are not mindful of it.

Ever use a cooling vest?

I was wondering if anyone has used a personal cooling vest like this one.  It's got gel packs that you freeze and it supposedly keeps your heart and lungs cool for a couple hours.

Air is the best cooling vest.

I hail from southeast Michigan, and in July, August and September, it was always fairly hot and humid. I guess all those lakes had an effect on humidity. So NC is not much different, except for maybe a couple degrees warmer. But like cats mentioned, it never gets that cold. The one thing that it is a lot like Michigan, is there's always a cold beer nearby. Working 6am to 4:30 doesn't help me much. But,I'll go out, and if I can't take it. I'll just cut the ride short. Still 364 more days to make a decision to ride
