Which bike should I buy?

I'm thinking of buying a new mountain bike in the $3000 range.   So many choices out there.  Been riding my 1999 Intense Tracer for over 15 years so almost anything will be an upgrade.  I trail ride, love to climb, but I'm not fast.  Definitely not a blazing downhiller.  Any suggestions?

Buy the bike the fits the trails you ride the most.

Do what you like. Stop hating people for their riding habits and get back to hating them for their skin color, religion, politics, and sexual orientation.

In all honesty, you should go demo a bunch of diffrent bikes.  You will find that you like more than the others. Get that 1

What everyone else said.  I can't agree more that you should go demo some bikes to find out what suits you.  And don't buy something just because someone else told you it was the greatest bike ever.  At your price point there will be lots of choices so don't rush and spend however much time you need to make the right decision.

Not enough information.

Hardtail, FS, SS?

A lot of great bikes out there in that price range, more that might need an upgrade or two.

Let's just say most bikes on the showroom floor in this price range wont be ideal. There are some hardtail exceptions.

Or you can build your own and save the cost of upgrades.

I would argue if you've been riding a 20 year old bike with 26 inch tubed wheels and perhaps v brakes you could spend half your budget and have a bike that'd run circles around what you have now and would be a lot more fun.  No need for upgrades.
If you like to climb you should not overlook a plus tired hardtail IMO.

I think at 3K you can get some great bikes right here in town.  Especially consider scooping up a demo if you ride something you really like.  That's what I did and I got a great deal on an incredible bike.

I'm used to my old Tracer which is full suspension and 27 speed.  I am definitely not a high end rider, so I don't need a bike that would be considered ideal.  Don't want to pay for carbon, and probably don't have the skill to appreciate the difference in a highly upgraded bike.  So a middle of the road, FS, alloy bike should be fine.  Was looking at a Specialized Stump Jumpper alloy, and that seemed pretty good.

If you are going to buy a new bike I would say buy the best frame and fork you can get for your budget (and wheels being the next in importance on the list).  If you want to upgrade other parts after that it can be done rather inexpensively by replacing the parts piece by piece.  But I have seen several bikes in your price range at demos lately that are specd out very nicely.

Still going to have to figure out

29er Fatty
29er
27.5 Fatty
27.5

coming from 26 (26 is dead everywhere but DJ) you might prefer the 27.5 but there is going to be only one way to tell for sure...Go ride them All

Don't forget to check
Trek
Giant
Pivot
Transition
Santa Cruz
Scott
Niner
Cannindale
...

Usually some big demo days around October like Cyclofest where you can ride 1 right after another on the same trails.  Best way to feel the differences between them and find something you really like.

Awesome intel, thanks so much!!  I'll look into Cyclofest.  I assume all info will be online somewhere.

Thinking a 29" wheel would be better for me.  No clue about fat tires.

BikeSource will be having mountain bike demo days at the Whitewater Center on Thursdays from 2-6pm July 19, August 16 and September 20th. They will have bikes from Specialized and Santa Cruz. There is also a Moutain Bike Festival in Brevard on October 13th with multiple bike vendors.

More awesome intel, thanks so much!!  I'm moving to the area on August 8th, so August 16 is perfect.

Cyclofest is usually in October.  Pretty sure Interbike and WWC have a contract to hold the event for at least 1 more year.  They have not announced dates yet as far as I know

Hmm... I think last year was the last year of the original commitment.

It has been announced on the Cyclofest Web page for this fall at the WWC.
I'm surprised you did not know that Chosen.
