Roots???

I cam across a trail guy a LKN on Monbo removing roots today.  I am wondering why roots are being removed on a trail that isn't really rough, and is actually fun the way it is.  I suggest you buy a road bike if you are looking for a smooth to ride.

Just sayin, it's a trail, not a dirt roadie.  Leave the roots alone

Another view:  Big roots that I encounter at naturally "slow" points on the trail (e.g. uphill on a turn) can cause my 26" bike to stop dead without warning.  This often results in some bruising and potentially a fall.

I for one am thankful for the great trail maintenance in general and for removing offending roots in particular...  Just sayin'

Do what you like. Stop hating people for their riding habits and get back to hating them for their skin color, religion, politics, and sexual orientation.

That goes to show, you can't satisfy everyone! I had to put up with stuff like that when I was TC at LNSP. Their are other trails that are rough with roots and rocks. You have to do for the majority of riders and LNSP has lots of newbies and first timers. Just my opinion.

I have worked, and will work on trails at LKN and many long before you all started riding trail.  To be clear we cut our first trails in 1980.  Now that the weak jabs are out of the way, the only choice when I started riding MTB was 26".  It was challenging as MTB should be.

For the record, he was working in an area without large roots.

I know, "if someone gets hurt they could close the trail" which is usually the follow up when someone brings up falling off their bike.  I assumed that was settled by IMBA many years ago when I was a director of a trail maintenance club.  Bad arguments, one and all.

So I'm for riding trail, so keep trying to come up with lame reasons to make it roadie like, and before you start a rant on Roadie Good, I have been riding road well before MTBs were on the market.  I still ride road when the trails are closed, yes I respect the trails when weather closes them.

Next bad argument

It'd be great to get that fellow out at Beatty.  He could chop 10,000 roots out of the trail and there would still be too many. Shocked

I forgot to mention, large roots should be covered not removed.

I'm down for machine built trails and have built jump lines for decades.  Last month I sampled Massanutten.  Lift ride sucked, Creamy rocked

That's actually a standard all trail teams should adhere too

Whats your name FR?  I live in Mooresville and am the "trail coordinator" for LKN.  We've got a good number of folks who do trail work out there and they all have my support.  Look forward to seeing you at the park sometime.  I ride a light blue giant trance, orange and blue TLD helmet.

On Monbo, the trail has serious drainage and erosion problems.  1000' long sections of trail have water running straight down the tread and that's why the trail has gotten so rooty over the past 5 years.  If you take the time to look at what's going on with the trail tread it's pretty impressive the amount of water thats flowing down the trail on Monbo.    That's just not sustainable and we'll be looking to address the issue in a big way over the next couple years once the Hawk loop project gets finished.

If folks are looking for really rooty technical riding, Fisher Farm has all you can ever want.  I rode there for the first time in a while two weeks ago and man has it gotten even more rough and technical.

I'm here to keep our trails fun and sustainable for the long haul so you'll get no apologies from me about trial work that is happening and the countless hours we're putting on trail and planning.  Thanks for your support of the TTB

If you are going to make a smart ass comment without having background information on the topic I'd suggest proofreading what you say so it makes sense.

The Land Managers of Lake Norman State Park have asked the volunteers to do what they do. The removal of the roots on the largely eroded areas was tasked upon this volunteer. And he is doing a wonderful job. Monbo is a fun trail-- but not sustainable. We hope to eventually work towards a more sustainable trail system-- so trail closures don't occur in the near future.

Colonel Francis Beatty as well, full of nice roots to have fun with. Would love to see some of the nasty ones being cut off  Wink

Are trails like Monbo and Hawk products of bad design. I look at the trails and think about the many closers that have been done over the years there. And it didn't seem to help a whole lot. Then they did the direction change each year, and it didn't seem to help a lot. It would seem best to have them multi directional at all times to help in a even surface. You look at trails out in the western mountains. They do have occasional maintenance. But for the most part, seem to go untouched many years, and are still fun trails. I was in the Itusi parking lot last week, and overheard a couple of guys on FS complaining about the roots. I don't do a lot of maintenance, I'm lazy by nature. It takes a lot for me to even get on my bike. Anyway just a little curious on why this and that need to be done, when in the long run. It seems not to help.

I stand corrected.  I rode Monbo again today and it appears most of the roots work was to cover them not remove the roots.  I didn't stop to admire the work until I saw the Trail guy also filled the mud hole in that section.

I apologize for my rant, and beg your forgiveness.  Thanks for what you do.

No Monbo was designed well.  I'm not a huge fan of Hawk but it is better than many of the trails in the area.

I love that the trails at LKN switch direction each year.
