A lot of shops stock them. I see on a bunch of bikes. Are they really the best for the price?

If they match your budget, you'd be hard pressed to find a better alternative. I put a set on my wife's bike and have been impressed by them when I test ride it around the yard.

How about your wife? Is she impressed?

She likes them. She doesn't constantly rave about how awesome her pedals are or anything. It's sort of like with a good fitting saddle, if it does what it is supposed to do you never really have to think about it. So in this case no feedback = positive feedback.

FWIW, 3 years later I am still on the same Raceface Atlas pedals I reported on in the link Doc00t posted. They have held up quite well. Pins still grip well. Despite many many pedal strikes, I have yet to break off or lose a single pin. I have replaced the large inboard cartridge bearings twice in 3 years; the sealing is not the best in that area. Both times it was due to water contamination (rust). However, in both cases, it was right after I got caught out riding in torrential downpour conditions and then driving several hours in rain with the bike on the rack (once at Beech Mtn, once in Pisgah).

Half of the performance of any flat pedal is in the shoe you are pairing with it.

My wife went from some crappy Vans on her Chester pedals to proper 5.10s and she said it was like night and day better...

I ran the Diety composite pedals (same as Chester basically) for a few years and they were awesome.

Price, performance, service-ability... hard to beat those composite style pedals...

Whether the Chesters, Diety's, etc... make sure the pins are replaceable and that the spindle is service-able.

I saw an ad for Shimano XT flat pedals. Are they new? Probably not very low priced?

the Chester pedals are fine, but the oneup composite pedals are better if you have big feet and soft shoes.
