I love making calendars and there’s a couple up on weeklyrides already.

So many things not yet up on the calendar, winter short track, summer series if it’s coming back, etc.

I know WWC is doing the whole enchilada race end of January. Once I’m in front of my computer tomorrow I’ll post what i got so far!

Another hope that 2019 brings some more local stuff in CLT!

I am not a fast rider, I would not do for winning but need to train mentally and physically for a race in July.
I saw  in your post that there is a criterium in Rock Hill, does it make sense to partecipate even though I do not care to run at full speed? Normally criterium being laps are a pure speed race or am I wrong?
For sure i want to partecipate to the race in Pisgah 55.5 k race as it will be same distance as my July race.
Do you partecipate to any race?

IMO, I wouldn't do the Rock Hill Crits unless you are confident riding in a group and willing to push the pace. Just riding around is dangerous to you and everyone else. I don't want to discourage you, but I would skip this until you know what you are getting into.

55k is a whole different beast, if you want to be tested mentally, this is the race. The hike a bike sections and pure tech here will push you to your limit.

Here is my calendar of things I'd like to do this year, I'm sure I won't do all of them though:

I'll do all the Winter Short Track races as long as it isn't raining Smiley

Jan 19 - Whole Enchilada
All the trails at WWC, I like that it's in the winter. Was run okay last year as it's first time, so hopefully they do better this go around.

~End March - Love Valley Roubaix
Great gravel race, Would be good training to do on your MTB as well. Lots of climbing.

~Beg April - 6 Hours Warrior Creek
Another good race that you can show up and have fun at. The trails are super fun and you could do this as a team instead if you wanted to. Great vibe, a must do, and I hate lap races!

April 20 - Bootlegger 60mile
there is a 100 mile version, but I'll stick to the shorter one me thinks. Unless someone peer pressures me into doing the 100. I have only heard good things about this gravel race, and again, would be great training to do on your MTB for the long climbs.

~End April - Saluda Roubaix 68
Another fast gravel race that is sort of local, not as much climbing and the speeds seemed pretty fast. Was close to my birthday last weekend, so that was the excuse to do it Wink

~May 12 - Rock Hill Double Down Crit
50/50 on this, but I'll put it on the calendar. Seems like a fun concept.

May 19 - Pisgah 111k
Rumors it may be a NUE race for 2019? Maybe someone can chime in. Since the rain 55k course was on most of these trails, I really wanted to graduate from the 55k to this race. Doing this only to say I did it, I think. The fast dudes did this in 6:30, the humans did it in 8+ hours, so a real mental test for sure.

June 15 - Tour De Kale
Not a race, but a really well organized cookie ride. It was so well run that I will probably do it every year. Water handouts, police escort, cold towels at the top of the final climb, food at the rest stops, food at the end. As close to a circuit road race at the pointy end than anything.

~Beg August - Crossroads Classic
That whole 3 day weekend intrigues me. IF I get a USAC license for 2019 maybe I give this a whirl. 2 Crits, 1 Circuit race.

~Beg Sept - 6 Hour Treeshaker
Anne Springs was a blast at JJFit Fest, bummer they didn't do it again this year. But this seems to be the exact same thing, with another 2 hours? Sign me up.

Hope that helps!

I would echo what James said about crits and add...  If you are not interesting in building the speed to hang with the group, you probably should avoid them.  In many of them, if you get dropped and are just riding around to get mileage you will get pulled out by the race authorities (due to safety concerns), which really sucks.  Save your money and yourself some frustration.

In addition to some of the great events James mentioned...

Racing in the Woods puts on a few fall distance events that would be good training.  Here's a link to their site:
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links).  They have the 6/3 Hours of Lake Norman coming up on October 14, The Search for Bigfoot Adventure Race on October 20.

There is Rudolph's Rampage on December 2nd:  (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

There is also the Southern Classic Series MTB races that usually start up around early March:  (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

Start 2 Finish runs the Winter Short Track Series and puts of other cycling races (hoping for a return of the Summer MTB series).  It's worth checking their calendar for races:  (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

Thanks for your feedback! i will go for sure to see it to have an idea.

Will you partecipate to any of these races? I saw the big encillada but was thinking about doibg the half (i think it is available). I should go to the WWC to try the trails there. Never been so I do not eve know how difficult it could be.

I see that Charlotte does not have enough races when compared to other areas, do you think that the cause is mainly because of the trails do not offer easy passing?

I plan to do some of these, it will depend on if life gets in the way or not! Some are easier to pull off than others.

No sense in doing the half, last year it was the half that wasn't on the fun trails. Get your moneys worth and do the whole thing, you'll be happier you did.

I haven't been here long enough to learn why, but I don't think it has to do with the trails at all. At times I think either A) racing is dying or B) no one races local and supports the grassroots events. That is a whole 'nother topic though.

i  will open a new topic LOL Grin but i have the feeling we would be the only two answering.
I an sure that there are cost such as insurances and so but there are many venues (not only WWC) that could be fub to use for a raceand that could benefit the club.

Thanks for the great info, i am looking to do at least three racesnext year.

That's why you need municipality and sponsor which are the worst thing to help. I personally knows the park and rec director will ask if the have funds...

Their use to be more local races.  People stopped showing up.  With less participation it became a financial burden to try and keep them going so many of then just stopped happening.

Summer series - ended
Southern classic Riverfront at WWC - ended
Grind on the Greenway and Uwharrie race (other 2 in Neal's endurance series) - ended
Cackalacky 500 LNSP - 2 years and ended

Riverfront was a little unfair; it poured for like 10 days before the last two times it was held here lol

Sad part is it's an out of town promoter = any profits from that race will go with the promoter out of town.  Does nothing for local chapter except create more trail work.

That happens in all business unfortunately. Then again the $1000000 why the THTB do not collaborate with a local company and they start a race series around the city. I have noticed that NC Velo partecipate in many events maybe they could be helpful. I understand that this was already discussed but how other clubs do?
