I tried to find a previous thread about lights and a guy that makes them locally.
Any suggestions on lights or contact for him since we will need them next week.

Here's one thread, Kevin Barker is the person you are looking for I believe.  I don't know if he is still building the SL2K lights or not.  I have two, they are good lights, lite and versatile.

Anyone know Kevin and can reach out?  I've got a few in need of a refresh if he is still offering it.

If not no worries, long live SL2k lights.

Or is anyone interested in trying to recreate these, with newer updated LED.  This might become my new obsession.

There's a whole forum on mtbr dedicated to making lights. But off the shelf lights have gotten so good and cheap lately, the price factor isn't really a benefit any more. I could see still making one if you have certain specifications you can't find anywhere else.

Maybe I haven't looked since 2013 or so when I got his first ones.  Do they come with mounted batteries that are quick change like that.  I remember having to use the stupid separate packs and cables and drove me crazy.

Man I would Kill to have another 2 or 3 of those lights.

Mine is still crushing it years later. And the batteries it uses are getting really good and burn much longer than ones I used 5+ years ago.

If anyone can find plans or instructions to make the SL2K I'd at least attempt building my own.

Did you get a new upgraded battery?  What did you go with?  I'm still using the OG ones from 13'

For you lucky folks with the SL2K light, it uses a generic battery that you can get online... the model is 18650

Panasonic, Samsung, etc all make these. Battery life, etc has improved alot since 2013 so get some new batteries and keep the Shart Light 2000 running strong!

I like the small, cheap and effective magic shine MJ-900 light.  $60.  800 lumens, I mount it to my helmet, with battery in my camelback pocket.

I've used a second light on my bars, but they seem to bounce around too much to be effective.

When good lights like this are available for so cheap, I'm not sure why I would build one.

Thanks for the helpful post Hermes.  I was stating I like the light I have that has the same LED and double the battery life but costs 1/2 of what the SLK did.

Magicshine (and many other mfgs) also have lights without battery packs:

This one, for $100 has two of the same CREE LED's, and 1 or 2 of the 18650 batteries.

My point was that lights are so cheap now, there isn't really a reason to build one yourself that costs more.

I would literally rather be dead than have a light with a battery pack.

I had a light with a separate pack. It lasted about 3 rides until a branch yanked it out.

Now I ride one handed and use the flashlight app on my phone.

I did some homework, and Fenix makes a couple stand alone unit lights with user-swappable 18650 batteries. The BC21R looks like a decent helmet light, and the BC30 or BT30R mounted to your handlebar would burn the woods down.

What would you use for a helmet mount?
