What trails will open today?

Any thoughts on trails that may open today?

Lots of trails closed given two straight days of sun / dry weather.  Ballantyne closed this morning?  USGS rain gauges in the area measured less than a tenth of an inch in the past 24 hours. Lips Sealed

What 2 days had dry/sunny weather this month?
I saw rain Tues AM, Wednesday AM, and some Wednesday night.
Sherman is posted open now but it was more soggy then i expected on Sunday afternoon before the Monday/Tuesday rain action. If you go Sherman today I would expect a mess.

After checking conditions last night, I was planning on opening Rocky Branch this afternoon.  But with the additional rain we got last night I will have to evaluate before opening.  Sorry

Rob, as it's gets colder you've got to remember that we're drying up slower.  The amount of rain we get will be deceiving in that it takes a longer to dry up with less heat.

Ground is seriously soaked south of town.

Will take two days of sunshine to get back to any degree of dryness.

More rain on the way. Then the leaves will fall.
Not looking like a good stretch of riding to me.

Anyone riding lake Norman today? If you’ve been out, how is it. Main page says it’s open.

I only walked a little bit this morning scouting some sections for trail work and it was ok.   Some running water sections and some perfect.  Obviously open so go ride.

BTW I could really use an extra hand helping lead REI volunteers tomorrow morning At LKN State Park. Please come if you can, meet at 8:30 in the parking lot.

Then there isn't any rule about riding your mountain bike on pavement if you don't have a road bike. It's supposed to be sunny and dry today🚵😀

I rode 20 road/greenway miles on a 140 travel full suspension yesterday.  Undecided
Think maybe I should keep my eye out for a hardtail.

Sorry, Ballantyne is and will be closed for a few more days. A few decided to ride when it was wet and portions of the trail and berms are in really bad shape and need to be repaired.

You should see Sherman Branch.  Trail was a sloppy mess yet the parking lot was standing room only.  If Sherman could be open today given the condition and volume of riders, any trail could have been opened.

I rode today and I have to say that most of Sherman was in pretty good shape. The last mile on the climb out however was a mess with running water on one uphill section of trail. At least that section of trail is pretty rocky and there wasn’t too many of the mud bogs to be encountered. Can’t imagine that section of trail will fair too well for today’s abuse. At least that section doesn’t have many man made dirt trail features to be damaged and hopefully the riding on the first section smoothed out some of the rutting in the turns.

I also live 2 blocks from the trail head at Ballantyne and can tell you that I had several inches of water in my yard a couple of days ago. As of tonight the ground is still muddy and would be a slip and slide on a bike. I mention this as the soil is quite similar to that on the trail and I have found it to be a very consistent model for trail conditions down the block. It also lends itself to the most simple of tests, the dog test. If the dog comes in muddy it’s too wet to ride at BDP.  Bad news, the dog had to be washed again today. Sad

Ultimately i believe that it’s not worth tearing up a lot of hard work for for a short ride. Luis, and many others have spent too much time delivering a very nice trail system to mess it up in the short term. As trail coordinator the call to open or not is Luis’s to make and I respect his judgement. The good news is that it sounds like we will have some sunny days this week and we can ride the hell out of the trails once they dry out.

Thanks Jeff! We’ve all put on a lot of time in that trail. We will definitely put some new signs there telling people to visit this page for trail conditions, a couple of game cameras and we are thinking on putting a flag system (red/green) to let people know when it’s closed or open.
