Since it's going to rain all week and trails will be closed thru... What's your best mountain biking experience?

Me, it's riding with my oldest in New Mexico, and climbing up to a prairie at x thousand feet full of wildflowers and butterflies.  He still talks about it, seventeen years later.

In 2000 , I did a week long mountain bike tour across the upper peninsula of Michigan. Utilizing gravel and service road, snow mobile two track, and singletrack. From Munising to Copper Harbor. In the fall of 2000, I attended the Canyonlands Fat Tire Fest in Moab. The new millennium was a great time for mountain biking

I rode with my brother up in Maryland for miles open end.   The weather was amazing and the trails were absolutely amazing.   I remember this  profoundly as this was the last time I rode with my brother ...  sadly he passes away a year later..  but the moment still lives on...

Other than that riding outside of Vegas was pretty crazy

OK, more than one, but here goes:
1) Riding Slickrock in Moab in July of 2000 with my oldest. Closest I've ever been to heat stroke, but we made it. Awesome views, unique trail.
2) Killington, VT with my youngest one June, still "mud season." Slogged around a bend and almost ran into a moose!
3) Any of the many trips to Tsali. I'd rent a cabin and bring the college/high school aged kids, along with nephews, friends, hangers-on, and we'd spend a weekend riding and cooking out. I know Tsali has fallen out of favor for not being a cutting-edge trail, but it is justifiably a classic and I've never had a bad time there despite flat tires, broken seat posts, lost cameras, etc, etc.

Just getting to think about your question, Robert, is awesome! Thanks for putting it out there. Let's hope the rain stops sometime.

small sample size, but what i read, is that it's not as much about the ride, but the experience with the people: relatives, friends, other (aliens), which i 2nd!
and then, there's the beer afterwards.

Rocketing down 14 miles or so on some unknown hiking trail off the Blue Ridge parkway in '88 on a Schwinn High Sierra full rigid 18 speed with center pull brakes.

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

The trail crossed a road at the bottom. Planned on road riding back to the top. I think it was about 25 miles or so, most of it uphill.

In those days, nobody wore a helmet, portable cell phones and mountain bike trails didn't exist, riding off a sheer cliff was always a possibility and you were essentially on your own when in the back country. Until you rode, climbed, hiked or crawled your way back to civilization.

I broke my derailleur in half near the bottom, shackled the bike to a tree and hiked back up to the truck.

Yep, them were the good old days all right.  Cool

2000 - Backcountry mountain bike tour in Utah with one of my best friends and 10 strangers for a week. Best part of the trip was hiking Angel's Landing in Zion National Park and camping under The Watchman. Lots of laughs and lots of beer!

A week at the Canmore Nordic Center near Banff with my 17 yo son.  Completely different experience than riding here.  Bi-directional trails.  Riding in the rain is ok.  Black topsoil with amazing traction.

Massive downhills at an old coal mine called the "coal chutes" that looked impossible to ride down, but we did it anyway (him first).

About 1/3 of the area was roped off due to mountain lion and bear traffic, and they removed the flagging mid-week.  Like the bears know they are supposed to leave by then?  Had another biker warn us of mama and cubs 1/2 way through a ride.

Best mtb riding ever - and not only because of the bikes and the place - because of the opportunity to ride it with my boy.

I could also have said riding Poplar Tent mtb trails with him when he was 7 years old, and we had to push his 45lb kids bike up half the hills.  Why were kids bikes so heavy, anyway?

! got my first mountain bike in 1983, so my sample size is pretty large. Here's a few that stand out:

Combining the Deer Park and Allamuchy Boy Scout Camp trails in NW Jersey into an all day epic that included a connector through a giant drainage pipe under Interstate 80.

A snow ride on Christmas Eve in 88 when my brother asked me to be his best man

The Mt Snow Norba National in 1994. 102 degrees at the start of the race, and a mid race jump into the snow making pond made it memorable. I also got to creep on Susie DeMattei

The first Olympic race in Atlanta. Not a ride, but what a day.

The 2nd edition of the 24 Hrs of Canaan where we won the Sport Class and finished 9th overall. The highlight of my racing "career"

A week long trip to Gunnison and Crested Butte with 2 buddies in a Saab with a bad O2 sensor. The trails, most notably The Luge at Hartman Rocks, made up for the Saab.

A shop trip to Tsali for some camping, trails, and camaraderie.

Reuniting with a high school buddy to hit some iconic SoCal trails while on a business trip.

12 year old me watching my Uncle's buddy John go OTB on Devils Drop at Poplar Tent and hitting a tree and snapping his brand new GT Palomar in half.

I knew I was destined to be a mountain biker right then and there.

RIP Poplar Tent...  Cry

-Last day of Poplar Tent, laps with so many people until it was too dark to see the trail any more

-Lap at Beatty with my then 3 year old on his 12" Hotrock. We come up on a group of walkers at a pretty good rate of speed, and he jams on his coaster brake for a stylish skid to a stop. His smug face, and the reaction he got.

-Renting a 5010 from Santa Cruz HQ, riding from the cliff overlooking the beach up into the hills around UC Santa Cruz for about 4 hours, and hooking up with locals for some truly wild bootleg trails, Mailbox was the one that stood out. (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

-Every Pisgah ride

+1 on this.  I drove an hour to ride Poplar Tent on the last day.  Although a sad day, I ran into a bunch of people i hadn't seen in years doing the same thing and had a chance to catch up with them.

These comments should illustrate to anyone that hasn't been to "the mountains" yet that they have to go!  Nothing gets you stoked on the sport quite like it.  It's like skiing in Colorado instead of Boone, surfing in Hawaii instead of Wilmington, etc...

For me it was my first trip to Fruita, Lake Tahoe, Moab, Interbike in Vegas.   We started at Lake Tahoe and did a great road trip south.
My first Pisgah ride left a big impression on me too (it was the loop that probably everyone does the first time) Bent Creek.
My first trip to Wilson's Creek was a blast.
At Poplar Tent I worked up my courage for a good month of riding before I hit that ladder drop.  Then I was shocked at how tame it was   Cheesy
I stayed in the Waterfall Cabin at Reeb Ranch for a long weekend and I highly recommend it.
Winning my first Mtn Bike race was a good feeling.

Now I am looking forward to my kids getting hooked on the sport so I can create another decade of memories!

Eating boomers back in '87 riding hard tails on nordic ski trails up at Catamount in VT.

Moab for first time in 1990. Mind blown.

Riding CB and Hartman Rocks in CO.

Racing til I puked damn near every race '90 - '94.

Hawaii.

Feeling like I'm 13 yrs. old last time I rode LNSP!

Best ride?  All of them.  Even the ones I hated as they teach me so much. Smiley
Or anytime up in George Washington NP.

Black Bear Encounter in VA

My most memorable was my first ride at Carvins Cove in Roanoke, VA. I was with my brother and at the trailhead he warned me about black bears. He hasn't seen any, but said there have been sightings.

We start on Four Gorges trail, and not 30 minutes into the ride a black bear is sitting on the trail. I almost hit the big guy. Luckily he saw me first and jumped up and the noise got my attention. We stared at each other for about 30 seconds before he walked away. By the time my brother caught up, the bear was out of sight.

On the Kenai Peninsula in AK, coming back down the trail fast from Lost Lake with my oldest - heard him (behind me) shout "Whoaa!"; stopped the bike and turned and saw a bear running straight down the trail at me - freaked - realized it was Baby Bear, quickly said a silent "Whew!', but then freaked worse. Baby Bear went off the trail up slope, mewling away, and sure enough, Mama Bear was on the downslope side of the trail - mad as hell  - snorting and bumping trees. So me and my cub had got between Mama and her cub. After about 5-10 minutes of Mama heading back up the side of the trail towards my cub (and me actually telling myself "If Son gets mauled by a bear, Wife's gonna kill me."), she finally crossed the trail. Wife 'bout killed me anyway!
