Is it typical here to get multiple days of rain like this current storm?  This storm is annoying because it's just enough rain to keep the trails too wet to ride and it seems to just keep coming.

NO!  Freeze/thaw is just as bad though.  Frozen is good, thawed is like grease that sticks to tires like glue.  Not fun to ride on

Rain here is often enough. Normal year is around 40 inches. This year is abnormal. The area is up by 13 inches over a normal year.

Yeah, this weather is a drag..

But it's not a bad thing. Gives your body time to recover from a hard season of riding.

Trust me, if you don't give your body time to grow and recover from the constant repetition, prepare for problems.

That's why it's good to have a cross training type regimen.

First year I was here, it didn't rain at all. I was at a good weight, in good shape. Each year it started getting a bit worse. One thing I find strange here. Is they close the trails when it snows. There's been a couple of times where there was enough snow to snow shoe or even cross country ski. But the trails were closed. I remember a few years back when they were pushing the sales of fat bikes. But you couldn't ride on the snow in the area.

Uhhhh. Yeah - it snows all the time. With our annual accumulation totals Charlotte is definitely a prime market for fatbikes. We should look in to dedicated snowshoe and snowmobile trails too.

Oh Douglas. You funny guy. Lived up north in the Buffalo NY area for about 10 months in 2014-2015. Owned a fatbike and did a lot of snow riding while there. A lot of snow driving too. Foot of snow overnight? Get up an hour early to shovel and clear your car and get to work. The north sucks other than winter riding. I moved back.

I loved in Waxhaw when it would snow and all these yankees would be like "You call THAT snow!!" and "You rednecks dont know how to drive in this stiff" blah blah blah... and then they'd proceed to immediately put their car into a ditch haha.

Us good ole' boys with 4x4 used to go prowling around pulling those same folks out right and left. Good times.

The temperatures aren't low enough to support frozen ground.

This means you're not riding on the snow.

You're riding in the slop underneath it wrecking the trail when it does dry out.

Yeah, you're right. It's kind of like talcum powder and refugees from Michigan. The south isn't perfect for all things. Neither is Michigan or any other place on this planet.

The real weird thing, is the red clay soil around here. Even one day of heavy rain will shut down the trails for days. I suppose that if you know What areas have more of a sandy consistency, that might be your go to area. Up in Statesville, the couple of trails we have, turn into mudfests. But we have a trail called the Hornets Nest, that dries out really well.

One thing that folks steal from the Yankees is lush green lawns. The soil in this part of the south doesn't support a healthy foliage. So one must prep their soil with lime. I never liked lawn work, so all the extra prep for lawns doesn't appeal to me. I did building operations for over thirty years. And a lot of my time dealt with snow removal. So us so called northerners have our experience with four wheel drive. The majority were made in Detroit back in the day. My dad even worked in the Chevrolet Truck Factory for over thirty years. I never really enjoyed driving on snowy and icey roads. And it got worse when SUV's showed up on the scene. People thought they were magical vehicles. I think the brine they use is useless. It would work good if the roads were plowed in a timely matter, then salted probably. That would be good. But as it goes now, the first layer melts, then adds a liquid to freeze over. I would have hated having to drive on some of these mountain passes. But I don't hate it here. Wish I would have chosen Asheville or Raleigh as my new home. We don't have good beer distribution here in Statesville

You can’t be serious.

Taxes are low here.  Housing is cheap.  Schools are decent if you know how to play the game.  There are jobs if you look.  We are at the intersection of two major interstates.  We don’t have Charlotte or Mooresville traffic (yet...).  One great bike shop and another new one.  Plenty of beer.  Miles of trails.  Decent roads to road ride (if you do that).  The weather ain’t that bad.  A revitalized downtown.

Two hours from the best mountain biking east of the Mississippi... and IMHO the best in the country if you’re into techy riding.  Good fishing too.

Three hours from the beach.  Minimal weather related disasters other than the occasional rain dump from a hurricane.

My only gripe about this place is a lack of newer, “healthier” restaurants.  Other than that, Statesville is pretty effing nice.

You get what you give.

I've been in Statesville for twelve years, and all this stuff has been slow coming. As far as good bike shops, the new one is really good. Have you ever been to an Ingles in Western North Carolina? Their beer section is comparable to some of the best craft beer stores. I thought the new one would be the same, but the manager complains about the same things other stores have. The distibuters in the area, will only sell what they perceive as good. Wine Maestro has a good selection, but they are pricey. I guess if you're a young person, the changes seem good to you as you grow with the community. But it's taken a long time to get here Cry I like riding at Itusi, but it seems like it's closed most of the time. I really like riding in the Brevard area, but it's 2-3 hours away.can't do that every day. Have you ever rode a bike on the roads here. It can be done, but if your by yourself, it can be scary. Many of times have I had cans of keystone light and kfc and bojangles bones thrown at me. As far as jobs go, there's doesn't seem to be anywhere a place that wants to pay my sixty year old self a living wage. 🚵😵😐
