Looking for Poplar tent pictures

I've looked around on a webz, but i am looking for pictures of the Beech Spring/Poplar Tent that is now closed.  Mainly interested in Gravity Cavity and Devils Drop.  Any type of pictures showing the features would be great.  Don't forget the Danger signs. HA!

Tsali, Cane Creek, and Poplar was where I originally rode (1993?) and have a little project I wanna do. Miss those trails so much Cry, but other trails have upped their fun game, so the sadness has been lessened. Cheesy ...but older now  Grin

thanks!  Cool

Meeeemorieees!

I also cut my teeth at PT, CC, Tsali, Renny, BYT, Sam Wilson (WWC) & Sandy Porter trails back in the mid 90's.  Such good times.  No such thing as "flow" trails back then, that's for sure...had to find your own.  Although, Tsali has flow in spades.  I have a few photos of PT from way back when but they're not digitized.  Old skool paper pics.  I'll see about scanning them...hopefully they'll turn out good enough for posting.

Nice pics David!

Both of the big oaks at Poston are gone now (disease/frailty). The original line had an “S” zigzag taking you by both on the way out.

To piggyback OP, anyone have photos of the Pop Tent skills area out front? The elevated skinnies run to platforms would be a nice concept to work in to a skills area.

I really miss the seesaw and gravity cavity among others.  All mtb trails should have a seesaw.

So many great memories. The "bowl"was my very first experience with jumping a mountain bike. I was riding an older Cannondale with no suspension and running 45psi in both tires back then. Nearly folded the front fork into a 90degree angle on devils drop. Great times indeed.  Cry

I miss that trail.   It's right down the street from my work to and I used to "step away from the desk" for a quick ride whenever I could.

Wow those Poplar Tent photos bring back the memories.

To think I used to ride a hard tail gary fisher with a crap rock shox elastomer fork and cantilever brakes down devils drop???

The teeter totter was cool - I rode it a little too fast once - it wouldn't start to teeter until you were almost off the end.

The big boulder was called "round rock".  The smaller boulder drop was called "rock dam".

One of my favorite signs was "furn valley" - no, not fern valley, but furn valley.

Then the climb out, labeled "short cut if you can".

What a cool place.  Had a table top out front my son used to launch at full speed from the road.  I think we may have been nuts.

It was a private property trail. The father/owner had a few sons who were into motocross.  I heard they had a motorcross track built in the backyard. They built the MTB trail across the street from their house. Opened it up to the public.  Its were many of us first got to ride "technical trail" in the area.

There was a Rock quarry next door.  I heard they wanted to buy it and offered them good money for it.  I'm sure others on here can give more detail who actually knew the family. Should have seen it in its last week. People came from far and wide to ride it for 1 last time.
RIP. Much respect to the trail that taught me a lot

I miss that trail also!!! It was on Goodman road off of Poplar Tent road and I-85. It was in Concord, NC. My sister and brother-in-law took me there for my first time. I fell in love with that place. I sure wish it was still around!!

If I'm not mistaken, the family that owned the land was the Andrews family? They did have a couple of sons that rode motocross and had a course in their back yard.

My first ride there was my first night ride, on a cold evening. Enoch patiently lead me and couple of other newbys around that night to be sure we didn't hurt ourselves. Was instantly my favorite trail.

Broke both of my legs at the same time on that motocross track. It's still there and I used to hear Mike riding it on occasion, but he closed it to the public too. Vulcan bought all of that property and some of the others around it, but they haven't done anything with it yet.

The property is owned by the Andrews family, Curt, Mike, and Larry, unless they sold it.  The trailhead is still there - you can see it on google maps, across from Curts old house and the MX track.

Mike was injured pretty badly at an MX race a couple years ago - I'm surprised if he's riding again, he had a tough go of a recovery.  The MX track does still look like it's there.  I used to ride there a couple times a week.

You can try hitting up Curt at Andrews Motorsports, but I think the reply you get will be that everything is closed to the public.

Great family.  The trails started as mini-bike trails in the woods for Mike and his brothers, then were developed into mountain bike trails.  MX great Damon Bradshaw trained out there with Mike back in the 80's and 90's.

I cant imagine the difficulty level of having to maneuver a big motocross bike thru the sinewy single track that comprised Poplar Tent.  Much respect.

I drive by there occasionally, the parking area and trailhead are still there.  You can see some of the old structures and signage from the road.
