Suggestion to trail coordinators for this weekend

Set trail status to open for the start of the riding day as temps will be below freezing.   Close for noon before things get sloppy.

Are temps and ground temps are two different things.

The ground is like the road. It's insulated somewhat from the cold air.

The air can be freezing, but without sustained freezing temperatures the ground surface will not be frozen enough to support a rider and his weight.

Hey, Rob!  Mark here. Smiley

I think it would be easier to leave the status closed and then let riders use their best judgement while it's still frozen.  If the ground is hard, go for it.  If it starts to soften up and get muddy, hit the greenway, road or gravel.

Smiley

General rule of thumb:  If the ground is frozen solid, ride it.  Unless it's LNSP and they'll still write you a ticket if it's close. Wink

Mark is right. The Rangers are out to get you at LNSP.

And, as always, the teenage employees appreciate everyone's constant calls and strongly worded concerns regarding the trail status.

Don't forget to call WWC.

Certainly better than the possible alternatives: nobody cares about the trails, and they go away.....

I'm surprised Springs is open.

Still alot of groundwater down south here.

The dry spots were crusty on top this morning at my house. But the low spots are still soaked.

I ran the Whitewater trails last weekend and they were slick and muddy. The place should be open by Wednesday unless we get more rain. I also ran Anne Springs on Friday and those trails were muddy. I think if the rain continues we may need to consider a second go to activity.

The Rangers (the ones who are protecting fragile, hard-won trails) are out to get you (the selfish who would destroy those trails to have a few hours of sliding on frosty mud) at LNSP (the home of 30+ plus miles of great single-track and the heroes who built and maintain it)...

Just sayin'
