Big and I mean big (as in started in 2017) project in Weddington to replace telephone pole power lines with metal ones currently very active.

The "yard" where the lineman are based out of is on Providence Road just south of Rea Road.  It's impossible to miss.  They may be able to hook you up.

PM if you want to go, it's 5 minutes from home.

I supervise pole work for a utility contractor. We remove old poles periodically and expect to work a big removal job soon (as in ~60 poles). I only have a few on the yard atm but we give them away all the time, you just have to sign a waiver and load them yourself. We also have all the unscreened fill dirt you could ever want.  Feel free to send me a DM

These are of various lengths. Some have been shortened by motor vehilce operators while demonstrating driving prowess. '

The ones in Weddington are likely full length if that's the route you go.  Also, will need to get permission from the yard boss to grab em.

I built a fence on a farm once when I was a young man with these as posts.  Their "design".  I agreed to the deal with access to the owners tractor and then the tractor broke down and I wanted to finish the deal sooner then they would repair the tractor..... I wouldn't plan on moving these much by hand any longer than 6 feet.   Unless your building a pole barn with a boom they are pretty much useless and way over spec for anything MTB trail related.  Pretty nasty stuff to play with and not worth their trouble for free even if you have a machine to move them.  Take my advice and find another material for your project.

I'll disagree with you.  While it's true that they aren't easy to move around depending on their length, with the right equipment they can be put about anywhere.  We used them at Sherman to build the Copperhead Road feature and they helped to make it solid as a rock.  The brown ones require a mask if cutting as the fumes and sawdust can be nasty, but for supports these poles are great.  I have plans to use more of them for some projects at Sherman as the year unfolds.

Utility poles have been instrumental for many of the bridges and projects at Fisher Farm and Allison Farms.  Are they over spec?  Depends.  I'd rather have them over built than under built.  The one short wide bridge on the lower Main Loop at Fisher used 18" diameter poles decked with 2x10s.  You can drive heavy equipment over it to get to the rest of the trail which has been very useful over the years.  Plus they make for great logpiles and they last a really long time!   Cheesy

That in mind, yes.  They are heavy and require manpower or machine power to move.
The club has both of those resources at it's disposal.   Smiley

Do we need to talk to or warn anyone at Fisher Farm if we come and pick up 4 poles this week? Are the poles in a visible place? Any further directions to find them? Thanks in advance!

PS/ I am working on the same project as the OP of this particular thread.

Yes. I need to know when you want them, what lengths you need and how you will be transporting them.  Since this is for an official club trail there are certain procedures we have for transporting materials and equipment.

You can give me a call and we can discuss. Smiley
