Salisbury Community Park 2019 projects

Hey MTB Folks,
Trail expansion is in the works in 2019 for Salisbury Community Park (SCP).  We're anticipating an Eagle Scout-led bridge build project will open up new area for 2 to 3 miles of trail near the RR tracks in the northeast corner of the City's park property.  Over much of 2018, we've worked through getting approvals from City staff for the bridge and trail.  We're introducing the plan to folks at an upcoming meeting:

7pm on Thursday, January 31st
City Tavern, 113 E Fisher St, Salisbury, NC 28144

We'll be planning work days each weekend in February to assist with the bridge build and carving out some sweet new singletrack.  I'll try to keep this thread updated with upcoming workdays as they are scheduled, so watch this post, but they'll also be noted with the local meetup group:

Not familiar with with one of the areas best trail systems and wanna ride or help build trail?  Here's a link to the SCP listing on MTB Project:

Despite what the MTB project says, there's currently just over 5 miles of singletrack at SCP when all loops are taken.  SCP also has lots of additional off-road riding opportunities for the whole family.  A paved greenbelt circles the lake, various gravel roads and running paths are available in addition to a full CX course.  Perhaps best of all during this wet period, SCP drains quite well and it's often available for riding when other trails are closed (big shout out to Gene and crew for their maintenance work!).

Hope to see some of y'all at the meeting, at a workday or on the trail soon.

This is a great underrated trail IMO.  Rode here once on the way to Lake Norman one wknd.....and was pleasantly surprised on how much fun and flow it had.  I need to get back here at some point.

Fresh announcement of upcoming work days at SCP!

The Boy Scout bridge project is a go and it's on for this coming weekend, Feb 2 & 3.

Correspondingly, we're planning to gather to assist with the bridge and/or work on the trail starting Saturday 2/3 from ~9am to 4pm and on Super Sunday from ~9am to 2pm.

The Scouts are prepared with a generator and power tools (and presumably pocket knives), but feel free to bring your favorite shovel/McLeod/hard rake or other implements of trail construction.  Of course, work gloves and appropriate footwear and clothing to get dirty in will be helpful too.

SCP is located at:           935 Hurley School Rd, Salisbury, NC 28147

and I'm trying to attach a quickie map to show where things are happening. Hope to see some folks at the meeting as well as the work days.

Many thanks to the Scouts of Troop 448, their leaders and the involved parents and friends as well as MTB fans that helped construct a complete bridge over the weekend!

Now that we've got a bridge, the trail work has commenced in earnest.  Future organized work days will be devoted to carving out the trail.  For the remainder of February we're planning to gather on the following dates/times:

2/10 Sunday 10am-3pm
2/17 Sunday 10am-3pm
2/23 Saturday 10am-3pm

Please bring your favorite trail working tools, gloves, etc.

Stopped by and met Gene and Mike (hope I got both names right) yesterday working on the new trail.    This is a great trail to ride.   I’m out of shape ,thanks to all the rain, and this trail is excellent for fun and not too much climbing to kill my weak legs.     Love the new bridge and can’t wait to see more of that new trail.

Rode that new trail and later had fun speaking with Gene and Mike in the parking lot. The trail needs YOUR TIRES ON IT but the lay of the land is really nice - they've done a great job laying it out and it promises to be a fun run once it's burned in. Luckily I was riding plus sized tires so I could get through the loam but when this gets firmed up it will be super nice!

Glad to see folks exploring the new loop, but please use extra caution if you do because there are numerous stumps and holes in the trail that could be hazardous.  We got most of the trees and dead fall out of the way this past weekend, but a few small trees remain in spots that could easily cause problems. Mountain biking comes with inherent risk, and trail that hasn't been finished has more hazards that can sent one OTB without warning.

Also, please consider joining us for an upcoming work day to fill some of those holes and remove stumps.  The next one is slated for this Saturday 2/23 starting at 10am.  We'll be setting the schedule for March work days soon and will post it to this thread.

Hey Folks - quick update for those following along or coming out to help.  We've made good progress over the past few weekends on the new loop.  The City just delivered a load of pit gravel to aid in filling holes and firming up some soft areas, which will be the focus this coming Sunday 3/24.  Material distribution will be key so bring your wheelbarrow if you got one (better yet, bring your gator with a dump bed and I'll buy you beers).  While there will still likely be some project areas to address in the future, our goal this weekend will be to get the trail to safe riding conditions by filling the remaining holes that are in/along the trail. Once that happens we can open it up for general use and user traffic will help fully establish the lines.

On a related note, we're strategizing about additional trail at SCP and some other locations around Rowan County.  If you'd like to be part of the planning process, contact me.

Announcing a couple of fresh opportunities to participate.

First, this coming Thursday, April 4th @ 7pm, we're going to meet at City Tavern ( (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)) @ 113 E. Fisher St., Salisbury.  We plan to discuss the status of the current effort underway to expand trails at SCP as well as planning for SCP's future trail growth.  To whet your whistle, next up might be some jump lines.  We have some other ideas in mind too, and we want to get everyone's input before we approach the City with a new plan, so please come and provide feedback.

Second, we've got another work day slated for Sunday, April 7th @ 10am, meet at the new bridge at SCP.  We should be able to finish some smaller tasks to open the new loop for riding, though a couple of project areas will likely remain for future work days. Bring appropriate work gear (boots, gloves, etc) and your favorite trail building tools.

We got enough done to open up the new loop over the weekend. Thanks to everyone that's pitched in to get us to this point.  The new loop across the bridge is about 1.75 miles and can be ridden either direction.  Please come out and get some tires on it to really help establish the trail.

Stay tuned to this thread for announcements about additional trails and work days at SCP.

We're going to be back at it at SCP on the days leading up to and including Memorial Day weekend.  We're starting in on the first of two planned one-way, gravity-fed jump/flow lines.  These are going in the wooded area east of the lake and paved greenbelt and they'll run from south to north coming out of the woods at the gas line right-of-way (see map below).

The construction first of these lines is going to be overseen by the good folks at Bear Bones Trail Builders ( (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) ) and we're going to be working starting Wednesday, May 22nd and going through Sunday, May 26th.

Please plan to come out to lend a hand at some point during these days.  Bring sturdy shoes, gloves and your favorite trail building tools/implements.  Bug spray and plenty of fluids are also recommended.  Folks will be out there all day, so feel free to drop by to lend a hand when you're able.  Thanks!

Jump line is open! Grin

First one-way trails at SCP.  Perfect for sessioning as a final berm sets you up for an easy spin up the adjacent fire road back to the top.

Hey Folks,
We've got a meeting planned for Wednesday, July 10th @ 7pm at City Tavern ( (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)) @ 113 E. Fisher St., Salisbury.  Please come.

We're going to discuss continuing trail building efforts at SCP.  We're also going to have to discuss our plan for ongoing maintenance in the wake of Gene D deciding to pull back a bit from his heroic efforts to keep the main trail so well groomed.  Also on the slate is developing plans for a late summer event at the park to celebrate all that has been accomplished over the past year (ain't that jump line fun!).  Please come out and join us at the meeting over a few brews or otherwise touch base so we can know that you're interested in helping SCP move forward.  Thanks.

Announcing a workday at Salisbury Community Park (SCP) for Saturday, October 19th from 9am - 2pm.

We'll be targeting re-naturalizing some areas near the jump line and helping drainage in spots there as well.  We also hope to focus on the turn at the bottom of the downhill run of the new loop/casey jones loop across the bridge.  If there's some heavy equipment available we may work on the secondary jump line trail as well. Bring your gloves, boots, drinks & snacks as well as your favorite trail building tools.

We're aiming for monthly work days from October through March, so come out an support SCP.

We've slated some work weekends at SCP for Jan and Feb 2020.  Our main goals are to complete the secondary jump line over this winter and get the trails prepped for the possible NICA race in March.  Lot's to do, so please join us if you can on any of these dates, Saturday & Sunday, from around 9a to 2p, Jan 18 & 19 and Feb 22 & 23.
