As I recall NC had some kind of registration back in the 80's and maybe into the early 90's.  Anyone else remember the red sticker with numbers on the lower part of the seat tube?  I know my BMX bikes as a kid had this and I'm pretty sure my first 2 MTB's from Bicycle East on Sharon Amity had this too.  This might have been a "license" but I recall a fee- maybe 5% or something being on the had written invoice from the shop.

I remember!  Still see old bikes come in with the stickers still on.  I think back then it was more for theft prevention/recovery than anything else.

As far as the registration goes I think it's intentions are good but will fail miserably.  $10 is not enough to fund the program AND put $$$ into cycling infrastructure.  As someone said above, it's probably a segue into taxation.

What the legislators and most anti bikes on the road people seem to miss is that probably 90% of the cyclists on the road own 1-2 cars per household that they already pay registration fees and property taxes on along with the house they pay property taxes on.  Road infrastructure is not funded by gas taxes for the most part.  That is paid for through the states general fund which is funded by property and sales tax. (I'm assuming that. Please correct me if I am wrong)

Anyway...just ride your bikes and don't worry about it.  It will get shot down very soon.

Here is my only positive argument behind the idea....those who have no clue property taxes and state income tax pays for a majority of road construction (not gas tax and vehicle registration fees) can no longer use the argument bikes should not be on roads because the users do not pay to build or maintain them.

I would rather pay a registration fee at the time i buy a bike to do away with this rubbish argument/roadblock to more bike infrastructure than continue to go in circles arguing with anti bike idiots who hold "cyclist not paying" as their shinning beacon objection.

I'm glad that this is an environment where you feel free to fail.

I pay for those costs with my car taxes, home taxes etc.

Guys,
Don’t forget the two bond issues that were passed in the 2018 election cycle for the City of Charlotte. That included $55 million for municipal improvements that specifically called out sidewalks and bike lanes as well as a second bond issue for $118 million for transportation related projects that were to include “at least 10 Miles of new side walks and bike lanes PER YEAR.”  Not sure what the rest of the State is doing but it sure feels like they have their hands in my wallet on this bike tax.
Regards,
Jeff

I'll probably do what I've been doing withy truck for years...Not get it registered until I get pulled over and get a warning....yeah my registration is due at the same time anyway but I still feel like I'm sticking it to the man!!  Hahaha.....Oddly enough I always pay property taxes on time but the roads still suck!  Huh?

So I would need one for my road bike, and for my mountain bike when I ride two miles on the road to the trailhead?

How will this proposal affect tourist and those here for events such as "24 Hours of Booty" et al?

More (and better) info on the "why" this is even happening:

The article states:
"“By request” is written beside Elmore’s name as the sponsor of the bill. This indicates that the bill was introduced at the request of someone, which Elmore said was a resident of the Brushy Mountain community concerned about safety issues related to the large number of cyclists on Brushy Mountain Road in that community.

“Several community members in the Brushy Mountain community have concerns about cyclists and safety,” he added. Brushy Mountain Road has numerous sharp curves.""

So can I request to put a tag on the cellphone? the use of text messaging while driving is far more dangerous than cyclist.
