Uwharrie Trail direction

Print Post
So, after living in Charlotte for 20+ years, I finally ventured out to Uwharrie.

I rode Woodrun to the Woodrun Camp, then rode Supertree and Keyauwee counter clockwise, at the suggestion of a fellow rider. After I was done, I seriously questioned my decision.

It seemed like Supertree was a whole lot of gradual uphill with not much speed going down and Keyauwee kicked my a$$ on 3 really long uphills. After I finished, I couldn't help but think that clockwise may have been a more fun (fewer/less uphills) ride.

Is there a general thought on which way to ride?

From Woodrun Camp: Woodrun trail to 24/27 out and back to warm up; Keyauwee clockwise to Supertree clockwise back to Woodrun Camp. Gravel road up to Supertree to Whitetail clockwise to Supertree clockwise back to Woodrun Camp for post ride beers! Done.

Trails in the NF are all bi-directional and can be ridden either direction. That being said

Most people ride Keyauwee clockwise entering the trail near the pit toilet and popping out where it crosses the Woodrun fire rd. Keyauwee has some tough climbs either way you ride but I think it's more difficult traveling counter clockwise (the way you went).
Super tree rides fine either direction and Whitetail rides best from the far end of super tree heading back towards the  pit toilet area.

Woodrun trail is also a great bi directional but the 1.2 miles recently added from the front parking is almost all downhill on the way out and all up on the way back.

At the end of the day, it mountains so you will have to make climbs to enjoy the downhills. You get to pick your poison either way

My personal preference is clockwise. Park at the highway, take the connector out to the bathroom/parking lot, then keyawee, then supertree, maybe another lap, then back on the flat connector trail to the highway.

I think that is generally the preference of mpst people that i encounter or have seen post. Keyawee is fun either direction, but i thought supertree was not worth doing counter clockwise last time i tried it.

Just my thought, Im sure someone will disagree. Wink

Good to know that my experience was, in part, because I rode it in the unfavorable direction. The other "part" is that I'm not a strong climber - working on that part daily. Next time I return, I'll run it clockwise and see how that differs.

Thanks for the input!

Riding Keyauee clockwise has more sustained downhill sections and the climbs tend to be shorter, though steep (with one notable exception starting with the last creek crossing).

The way you rode it, it has a lot of short downhills and more sustained climbs. To me it feels like I'm climbing about the entire time when I ride it counterclockwise. The short downhills aren't even enough to get your legs back before you start climbing again.

FWIW, prior to the IMBA rebuild/expansion a few years ago, it was the opposite. Most everybody rode it CCW.

I'll also chime in here - clockwise is my preference.

A new opinion - I also kinda dig out and back on Keyauwee (from the lot).

I usually ride Woodrun to the bathrooms up Keyauwee around clockwise then Supertree (All messed up right now), then back up Woodrun road to the top and Keyauwee back to ride it counter clockwise and then back to the upper lot via woodrun trail.

When did they do the expansion?  I rode there back in late january.  Did they connect the front parking lot to woodrun camp parking lot?

I park in the upper lot, take Woodrun trail from the very top to Woodrun Camp, Keyauwee Clockwise to Supertree Clockwise to Woodrun trail across the little stream and then take the original "Trailhead" exit on the right and the gravel road the rest of the way (not worth climb that gravel crush at the top of Woodrun, IMO).

Still don't know where Whitetail is. It isn't signed (I have a suspicion, but...)

Supertree is Superfast Clockwise. It's a slog clockwise.

I ride it all clockwise also but have ridden Kewaunee CCW many times and its still fun.

Whitetail directions - If you're riding Kewaunee CW and you get to the end at Woodrun rd, if you cross the rd and take the new(est) section of trail to the left (I think considered part of Supertree), when you pop back out on the double track and take a left, Whitetail is just a little ways down the double track on your right (just before Supertree doubletrack starts DH).  You'll know you're on Whitetail if you cross Dutchman's Trail (hiking only) just a short ways after getting on Whitetail.  Whitetail is great from that direction (much more DH)
