Didn't think it could get much worse from the last time I rode there.   Damn.

The lack of any real soil and all the rain this spring, ouch.

Yes. 5 years ago I said you could cut out 5000 roots and there'd still be too many out there but it's pretty well blown out now.

When I lived around the corner from the Col I rode it all the time for years.  I taught my son to ride there. I moved away 5 years ago but had the chance to ride it last week when I was in that part of town. What a disappointment!   While I appreciate the effort with the new bridge work, the trail itself has deteriorated into a root rock and rut mess.  There is no flow, all you do is bump and jerk.  The “new” black section when first built was a dream to ride with great flow but now it’s no better than the rest of the trail.

The pump track is fun, but in my opinion it’s the main loop that could use a serious long term plan for rehabilitation.

And here I am thinking Beatty is the best it has been in years.

Could be the old age or that I ride a 160/150 bike.  Shocked

I’ve been riding Beaty for 4 years now and would agree that it’s the best it’s been in that period of time. Yes there are roots but that’s part of what makes the trail unique and a challenge to ride. And I would say that the man made features that have been added are some of the most creative and fun in the area. Granted I’m riding full suspension bikes at 120 and greater but my son really likes it on his hard tail too. If anything I would say that the average skill required to enjoy the trail may have risen and perhaps that’s why some are not enjoying it as much as in prior years. Over-all I’d like to thank the trail coordinators for their work in developing a very fun trail.

You need to expand your riding horizons if you think FJB is "good",  as there are many better options around.

Nothing against the TCs, as they have done the best job possible with just a plain mess.  It can't be fixed without a significant dedication of resources.

Raise the pump track that's always closed and nobody knows about and use the dirt to armor the main trail

Only if you can find a donor to give the club back the $50K RTP grant it used to build it. Wink

My idea of “good” is having 9 solid options for riding within half an hour of my door. I appreciate all of those opportunities for what they are as each has a different flavor to them. If Beatty isn’t you cup of tea that’s ok, enjoy your ride at one of the other options we are blessed with in the CL T area.

+2 on that one.  Ran into my first copperhead at Springs crossing the trail and was pretty stoked.  Sorry kind of off topic but had to share.  Tis the season!

Four full days after what seemed like a controversial post (col beatty is in the trash) and only a handful of comments. I haven't been to beatty in a couple years, but it's either so bad everyone agrees, or not many people here care.

Hell, "green loop concerns" get more interest.

That would be me. Counterpoint: the pump track is very good. Your opinion is bad and you should feel bad.

Actually, I do agree with some of your points. Beatty has been rode hard and put up wet for years. Cutting out roots is a lipstick/pig situation. It makes it smoother for a time, but doesn't fix the underlying design issues and speeds up erosion. We cut out 100s of roots on the blue trail a couple years ago, but you'd never know it.

I had more aggressive plans for fixing up the singletrack, but taking on Trailblazer prez means I needed to pass Beatty along. I know the new TCs Eric and Daniel have been spending time out there, and we have been discussion some larger projects to take on big priorities: the mud bog back by the giant chess set, the green reroute that has severely eroded, and the green trail in general. Once we have all the pieces in place, there will be some big workdays out there.

I've always enjoyed Beatty just because it's so different.  There are rocks and roots and it doesn't flow all that well in some sections, but I guess you can't please everyone.  There are plenty of race tracks in Charlotte to battle for KOM's.

People don't care unless it's on Facebook.  Funny there are no references to any active trailwork at Dixie River here, yet on Facebook equipment doing work at Dixie gets stolen.

Oh and FJB sucks.  Not for lack of trying, it's just horrible soil or lack thereof.  Sherman and BYT are sustainable, FJB is not.

Limited resources.  Time to give FJB back to Char Mech Parks and Rec and deploy club resources to trails worth riding.

Do you really think a couple of volunteers can even began to make FJB anything other than what it is. I ride it several times a week with a lot of friends who enjoy it and really don't see the need in trashing it.
Prompts to all who built it for us and to those who choose to maintain it. I hope you will contribute anyway you can.
I'll keep doing what I can

Agree with msedly...you gotta accept Beatty as it is. Gratuitously rooty, yes, but fun in its own way, and useful for building skills. It's only 2 miles from my house, so I can ride there. Maybe that skews my opinion, but I'm happy to have the option.
If I can drag my 66 year old butt around it, you young guys should have no problems there!

Exactly.  Was it in better shape 7-8yrs ago when a ton of work was done, sure.  Would I rather ride Sherm or Purser or RRT if I have time to fight traffic, definitely..  but Beatty is what it is and and I still ride it at least once a week.  I don't get people that complain about it who aren't out there maintaining it.  We all make choices and no one is forcing anyone to ride it!?

BTW, the pump track is awesome and has held up really well considering the weather we got after it opened, throughout the fall.  It isn't everyone's cup of tea but my kids and I (and a heck of a lot of other adults and kids) LOVE IT.  If you put in the time to learn how to pump, it rips.
