So I rode my beloved RRT yesterday morning and was the first person to sign the check in sheet......I'm too experienced to make that mistake! Next time I get there first I'm turning around and going to Sherman!

EXACTLY!  I'm over my Arachnophobia now! Don't bother me anymore since I ate a few dozen and have new webs forming under my seat, entwined in my cables and every nook and cranny imaginable..I swear I blew through over 100 webs!

Give it one more shot, especially on a morning I want to ride there.  I think you were there on a super weird day.  No spiders there.   Wink

I was just poking fun....I ride RRT every chance I get....my personal favorite trail.  Rode it once at night backwards in the snow...best ride ever!  I just won't be first in the early AM again!

Looking for constructive information on RRT. This has been a particularly tough year on trails leading to more required maintenance. I have had other things that have required my attention and just haven't been able to put the normal time in.

My question is what do I need to do to make RRT more appealing or maybe approachable is a better term? No, elevators and such ain't gonna happen. Looking at adding a permanent porta jon but not really sure if the expense is worth it. Ridership has been in decline a good bit over the last several years. Good weeks lead to average 45-60 riders per week. To date this year Strava shows 79 unique users, while Sherman has had 713 and North Meck 397. I expect this is partly due to the increased # of trails and the millage they bring to the area. I expect to retire at the end of this year and have my other projects behind me so should have time to do the work I enjoy. Goal is to keep the trail from going the route that Beech Springs did. Then it can be another that everyone can talk about. I can color another route that makes for about 8 mile loop and with the only 2 climbs included being River and Gorge. I've not really done anything to promote RRT most people I encounter that say its their first time out say they were reluctant to give it a try because of the horror stories they had heard.

I would just clean up what is there. Several root balls have disrupted the trail on Stairway. Heavy Rain has washed a few other spots. A little touch up here and there is all it needs. It has always been demanding and that is fine, It just has worn harder the past couple of years.

Your core group of riders will always ride it, I just dont think you can do much to make more palatable to the less experienced riders. It only appeals to people who want to accept a challenge, unlike the ones that just want a easy trail.

Go ride it    Wink Wink (Wink Wink) and you will have a more informed opinion

Do what you like. Stop hating people for their riding habits and get back to hating them for their skin color, religion, politics, and sexual orientation.

Agreed on what does the trail need.  Maybe improved signage both directional and "sectional" would help market it and make it more approachable.

Porta Jon would be a good play IMO but not make it more of a destination.

The location makes it a little further out of reach for the bulk of the population but I'd expect the Concord, Harrisburg and Indian Trail housing markets will continue to boom and your place will make more sense to more riders in time.

I like your primary goal of it not going the way of Beech Springs.  You have already secured your legacy as a major contributor to the local scene for those that know.  Keep doing what you've been doing and don't be afraid to ask for some help.

Count me among the 79 on Strava even if it's been more than a month. Roll Eyes

IF you want to make it more of a destination or improve rider numbers, build a jump line. Tons of the younger guys are VERY eager to have more jumpy places... Evan did a great job building (and marketing) with the new Cedar Valley, the BYT jump trails have some pretty good usage, Dixie River - once it has parking - will have a lot of pull. Youve got a lot of great elevation to work with... recruit Josh Krynok, Evan St Clair, or a few of the other guys well versed with jump lines... nothing like that in your area...

Aside from that, you have done an awesome job and i appreciate the trail and all the work youve put in... its about 30ish mins from my house, so on a weekend that I don't head to the mountains and want a good, hard ride... it could use some cleaning up of the washout/holes and such, but death valley and some of the other steep chutes are just an awesome addition and very different from anything else around charlotte...

If you want more people to be less intimidated,  try to get some of the local shops to sponsor a social/supported ride, or see if the club can host a cookout/ride to show people around and make it less "intimidating" for those that havent made it out there because of what theyve heard. Esp if they lead a group on the green loop...that might make people coming out knowing that there is a less intimidating option.

I love RRT as-is. I don’t ride it that often due to distance from my house. I’m 5 mins to BYT, 20 mins to USNWC, and 40 mins to RRT. Just reading this makes me want to get out there more. Also, I don’t use Strava and sometimes forget to sign in. I usually leave $5 when I have cash.

I do think more signage would help. I tend to get turned around near “wet bypass 2” and end up going backwards. I also don’t understand the downhill lines, but I just go with it and enjoy. I only make it out a couple times a year or I’d probably have figured it all out by now.

Thanks for all you do out there.

First off, yes I know I'm about to get blasted.
Second, I have never actually just ridden the green loop so not positive exactly what all it entails.

To me if you want to make it more "approachable", take the green loop, nueter the mess out of it, open it up(not machine open but opener then it is) and make it the main loop. Make it 5-6ish miles.( I wanta think it 4 or so now but I really dont know. ) Make it pert near redundant to follow. ( neon arrows would be cool).  Then make all the other trails options.

That's valid, but even the green loop is harder than the majority of trail at Sherman and much of the WWC stuff. Sanitized or not its just demanding terrain.  I think machine built flow trails can be fun too, but please not out there.  Keep singletrack single please.

I personally think the loud group of not experienced riders scare people away from trying it and the smaller group of experienced riders don't spend as much time online.

I constantly have to convince people to give it a try after they are almost scared away by others. The trail is great and its really not "that" hard. I'd hate to see you make it easier.

I think what Jerry said is best. Clean up whats there some and we need to make RRT seem as awesome as it is and not let the loud people talk others out of it.

I appreciate the comments. Kevin not going to throw rocks at you! Actually to gain riders yours is an excellent idea. I will likely try to make a well marked trail that uses the green loop plus a little more. I will try to get some brush cut back but not likely to make it a wider corridor. Maybe clearing the brush will make it feel more open. I've seen comments that it felt so narrow they couldn't stay on the trail.

Keep the ideas coming. Jerry, I finished working on Stairway about 3 this afternoon. Opened more drains and did a major overhaul on the section close to the top where you climb and then drop back down for that rooty left hand climb. Had to do some tough work on that little downhill the outside had to be cleaned down in order make it possible to shed water. I'll work on the root balls on other parts of the trail and that rutted part of the #2 bypass next.

By the way I have a corridor in mind for a jump line not my area of expertise may be looking for input when winter comes around.

Most the people I go out there with for the first time say it's their favorite trail.  I do think "lack of riders" is partly because it's out of the way and but I think the majority of the difference is that out of the 700 riders at sherman, half of them probably have no idea about your trail, they more than likely found sherman on the county website as a place to bike.  I would think making a flow trail would double your number but the only thing I could see getting the number of riders sherman has is a jump trail.  That seems to be the new hotness and probably the most feasible for RRT's terrain.

It's too far for me to drive to ride after work so unfortunately I only get out there on the weekends.  I also can say it's one of the only trails around that I wish I would have brought my older bike with slightly more suspension when I road it on the 4th.

Love RRT, only reason I dont ride it more is that its a hike from Uptown. Only thing I would change about it: I would love to donate via Venmo or Paypal!! I rarely carry cash so I just have to try to remember to drop a $10 or 20 in there every so often. I prob end up donating more than $3 per ride but I'm happy to do it. Venmo would just be more convenient.

My son 13 year old trains here a lot.   From someone with IBS no porta Jon is a major reason we ride a Sherman.  A jump line would draw a lot the younger crowd and the trail has a reputation of a lot of climbing.  The fire road exit at Sherman helps a newb get into shape, 3 miles then 4 then 5 the exit helps. Don’t shoot me but advertise to the ebike crowd a welcome place to ride. Setup a way to pay via text and or a monthly donation, I have left change in the box!
