If you've got physical limitations, perhaps the back country isn't the best place for you..

I can't wait until the lawyers get involved, and start suing the industry for giving these people exactly what they wanted.

Physical limitations are only one reason to ride them. They are plain fun. They require some exercise to operate, and can actually help an experienced rider improve in various ways.

Plus just look at the bike industry. Every major brand has 3-4 models available. Heavy hitters like Shimano, Bosch and Yamaha all in. It’s happening. I suggest you try one and then give your opinion. No shade on a pedal bike and no shade to the dirt bike crowd, this is just a really sweet blend.
Now heckle me for riding the ebike at LNSP, with wait for it...HEADPHONES!  No he di’nt.

I wouldnt worry about ebikes taking over the trails. They are just too expensive for the general mountain bike demographic.

Just give it time. They will drop in price. I’ve read the bill and it’s not as bad as some make it to be.  I’m old school though and don’t consider something with a motor as being ‘non-motorized’. The industry is pushing e-bikes hard. I mainly think this is because bike sales are flat and this is a ballooning new market to make money at. On the MTB side, I do think it’s a slippery slope.

Yeah, to the best of my knowledge:)

The price is for sure dropping fast. I just witnessed 3 kids zipping around the neighborhood on 20 inch EBikes.  Probably 11 to 13 years old, close 20mph, no pedaling, no helmet, no problem....
These weren't  MTB's but the power to weight ratio was impressive even if they're mopeds disguised as bicycles.

e-bikes aren't any more expensive than a decent trail bike.  This is happening and it's not a bad thing.  Try one...on dirt, then give your opinion.

Orange and his party are desperate for votes ahead of 2020.. They'll do anything.

There, I said it.

Open up a little virgin wilderness on behalf of the industry and a few grandpas and grandmas dying to enjoy mountain biking again, no problemo.

Egomaniacs and Stravabags rejoice.

Soon, you'll be halving your fastest time at our favorite trail either on the bike or off of it..

You sound like an undereducated DB. So ebikers are Trumpies now? Guess I’ll change my voter registration and buy a red hat. Or maybe I’ll just go for a ride...

Smiley

Well golden, I don't know if you bothered to check the topic or not..
But this thread's not about how exciting it is to ride your e-bike at your favorite local area trail.

This thread is about the Interior Departments (an executive department of the Trump administration) decision to designate these contraptions as non-motorized vehicles (that just happen to have a motor) and allow their use in national parks and on other public lands..

Yep I read the article and it makes me happy. The act also opens up more areas for mtb’s in general. That makes me happy too. Don’t get your panties in a bunch now. Just stick your head back in the bush and accept the changes.

Accept the changes.. Accept the changes?  Grin

Yeah, and wait for the e dirt bikes. Because they're coming too.

You just don't get it do you..

These folks will sell you, me and anything sacred in this country down the river in a heartbeat for a few votes and a 5 spot.

Tell me, how many times have you contemplated riding your ebike at a national park or on any federally owned lands lately? Not enough trail at RRT or down at the Whitewater center for you?
You really need the federal governments validation of your moped and no restrictions of any kind to make you feel whole?

Non-motorized vehicles. Nothing has changed, except the definitions are becoming increasingly idiotic and fake. Pushed by special interest groups with no allegiance to anything other than making off with the loot.

Geez.

Even better.

I am curious.  For those local bike shops carrying ebikes, are you now hiring not just mechanics but electricians as well?  Will local shops be able to service issues with the electrical system on bikes they sell or is a return to the manufacturer (i.e. Specialized) required?

Not really a big deal as there are very few National Park trails you can even ride a bike on in the grand scheme of things.
Acadia is about it and those are greenways anyway.

Pisgah? Uwharrie?

I started very anti-ebike. But I've seen a couple previously strong riders struggle with illness or injury. And if it takes an e-bike allow them to ride again, then I'm glad the option is there. Still annoyed by regular joes using them as a shortcut, but that's my problem I guess.

Oh wait. The rule is for national parks only, and doesn't affect national forests?

Correct... This is just a bunch of smoke and mirrors stuff that is misleading alot of folks.

The rule states eBikes are now legal in National Parks ONLY where regular traditional pedal bikes are already legal.

Which is basically nowhere... Almost no National Park allows bicycles in the front country, let alone the back country.

and... They are regulated to Class 3 so those with a mild pedal assist.

Basically this affects almost nothing and pretty much no one.

National Forests (Pisgah, URE, etc.) fall under the Dept of Agriculture (not Dept of Interior like Parks) and they, so far, have not allowed eBikes on National Forest land.
