This looks pretty rad, especially from the photos of the trails.

Makes me wanna check out the trails too, didn't know anything else existed over that way, minus the gravel stuff.

Dang Pearl. Where you been? The Keyauwee and Supertree, White tail and Woodrun are pretty fun trails and rideable nearly all conditions.

Anybody ridden the trails this race uses?  Wondering if they are similar??  I think most people familiar with URE ride the south trails mentioned above.

I may pre ride a part of it just because it will be something different.

The Badin Lake side stuff can be pretty brutal.  Trails get use from equestrians which takes a toll on the trails.  Alot of times they just blaze new trail.  Their is actully a plan to decommission several miles of trail over there because it's considered a lost cause.  Not sure which trials they plan on using (route) but they are not "bike optimized" trails. That's for sure.  The OHV trails are alot of fun but technically you are supposed to purchase the OHV Pass if you use those trails. They will probably not be part of the coarse.

So i downloaded the route to my GPS and off i went! 25 mile route and 4 hours of daylight. Now I may not be the fastest in Charlotte but i got game and regularly ride 25 over on the "real" mountain bike trails at URE. Four hours seemed like a reasonable amount of time, would be no problem on the other side. Took my lights just because I had a vague ideal of what to expect, Damn glad I did! if you ride Pisgah and have done the 55k or pretty much any of the Pisgah Production events then you have a good ideal what to expect. Short version of a long day on the bike, 5.5 mile an hour average lots of hike a bike sun went down got lost found a gravel road. Went wrong way finally flagged down a truck full of dirtbikes in the dark and got directions for an 8 mile gravel ride back to car! Actually was a fun day all things aside. Everybody needs an adventure once in awhile.

This actually sounds even better now! Was it hike a bike because it wasn't rideable? Or what exactly made it that way?

Sorry for the delay, several trees down but not to bad. Those trails where laid out for horses and hikers, bikes weren't considered when it was laid out. Climbs are mostly straight up a hill side and not back and forth like you tend to find on mtn bike trails. That and throw in the horse traffic and the climbs are chewed up pretty good. Plus horses tend to expose the roots so a climb straight up a hillside and then the roots you be pushing! The creek crossings were not to bad the direct route through them tended to be pretty deep and rough. But I had no trouble finding a way over them. Just had to look a little and go up or down stream a few feet. I hope they put the word out in the horse community about the weekend of the race. I literally saw groups of 10-15 horses at a time! As all bikers should know horses have the right of way. All of them seemed surprised to even see a bike on those trails. When I explained to several the reason I was out there, they all were surprised to hear about a bike race coming there. Yes I plan to go back and ride the FULL route. Hope this helps!

Just a heads up, they announced its on the standard URE trails now, not the ones by Badin Lake. Does that change your mind?

*UMBC Trail Changes*
With the winter conditions making the Badin Lake trails very wet/muddy, we’ve decided to move the race to the Wood Run Trailhead of Uwharrie National Forest. This will make for a better overall riding experience.
If you’ve already signed up for the race, go check your email for details. We just got the approval this morning for this change. Please bare with us while we rework the logistics for the race. We will keep everyone informed and get this out to you ASAP.
If you haven’t signed up yet, get signed up today at (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links). You’re missing out if you’ve never ridden these trails. They’re so much fun!

75 bucks for 24miles...I was also under the impression that the long course is 48mi.  But it looks like 48mi. is 24mi on Sat. and 24mi on Sun.  Lame!

To be fair, the original long course was @24 miles, albeit 24 slower miles.  The 48 mile figure was for the two day race (two 24 mile days running the same course, once in reverse).

Yep would be better if it was 50 miles and still 2 days. A true test of rigid single speed stupidity.

There's still the 24 mile long two day option (or single 24 mile long days or back to back 12 miles days or single 12 mile days).

But true, longer = better.  That side is silly fast (even on a rigid single).  I got 55-57.5 miles in 4:38:18... back when I was seven years younger.

I remember those races and I remember you and I believe Dung Lee passing me on a climb. I was racing rigid that year but with gears and running 2.2 tires. It was the last 55 miler out there that convinced me I was done with narrow tires and a rigid fork combo.

I had this on the calendar but it seems like it's gonna be a XC race now... and the price for that is kind of steep for a one day banger.

I don't get why the one day long race cost more than the short race. its almost like theyre encouraging you to save money and sandbag.  People race short/long because of their ability and shouldn't be penalized for going longer.
