What's up with the trail?  Been closed for over a month and now not even listed on the trail conditions.  What gives?

Fixed it. Don't know why it was not showing. The status only changes when the status changes.
I'm not the TC for that trail, but am in Mooresville weekdays. With the mess that is sitting over us today and into this evening, it's a sure bet it will a mess this weekend.
Oh well! Job security for us volunteers. Wink

I stop by there periodically on my way home, and dive in the fire road to the back side and check on it.  It's definitely been a mess, and has been for a while.  Freeze thaw isn't going to help it.  Maybe if it freezes over we could ride it... bit it definitely should be closed right now.

Hey All
I am the TC of Mazeppa. Some friends of mine work place is right near the park and they Check on the trail conditions daily for me. I am working on a trail work date probably somewhere after the winter short track series ends. Now if we start getting better weather I will definitely get out there sooner and start picking away at some of the debris and fixing some of the mud holes. I will say maintaining this trail has been a real challenge for several reasons.
Number one: We have been getting ALOT of rain. So when the closed trail sign is up (big yellow chain link with a 3” PCV pipe with reflective letters saying CLOSED) and the trailblazers website says closed, it’s NOT Rideable. So there are people riding it when it is closed making a damn mess of it, and not only that someone is cutting down trees,  making Shortcuts,  and hell making their own trails out there. Me and another trail Blazers member spent 2 1/2 hour hours out there making some pretty good size blockages for the Shortcuts not even one week later those blockages were totally cleaned out! Now who would take the time to undo something that was never intended to be there?
Number two: It is a brand new trail not even a year old. Trying to understand what the trail needs to improve it for Short term and yrs to come is very hard when people are making their own lines/trails and riding it when it’s closed.
Although I’m new to this TrailBlazers volunteer coordinator position. I have great direction and support from many veterans of trail build and maintenance, but that doesn’t mean I don’t need everyone’s help on thought’s and maintenance. Hope this helps with why the trail has been closed for some time.
Thanks for understanding.

I saw they were having a race there in June. Should be fairly hip to run a race there.

Short-cutting has been much more prevalent lately.  At least at the trails that I ride on a regular basis (Poston & WWC).  I usually try to stop and throw some branches, rocks and anything else I can find over the shortcuts but it always seems to get moved.  Seems to be all for the sake of shaving a few seconds.  I would tend to think they develop based on laziness, but clearing out debris just to shortcut isn't exactly lazy.  I definitely sympathize with the trail coordinators because it generally makes maintenance more difficult.  Oh well.  As long as someone gets the fastest time of the day that's all that matters, right...?

Are you talking about Strava-idiots?

Let me know if they continue to be a problem and I will post times on the trail, every day, that they can't beat.  And I won't even ride the trail Smiley

I agree we need to get the word out that making unauthorized trail changes is NOT cool.  In the case of Mazeppa, that’s wasting the $70,000 it cost for the design and building of the trail.  The designers understand MTB FLOW which the short-cuts obliterate and make boring straight trails. I encourage all bikers to take the time to block those illicit short-cuts until the perps cease trying to change an otherwise awesome trail.

As for your opinion about Strava users, judge a person by their character and not by the color of their bike, the size of their wheel or the app on their phones.  You might just find some new riding buddies.  If you’re ever up at LNSP, let’s ride.   Smiley

I think I may have ruffled some feathers with my last comment.  I'M a Strava user, LOL!

In the various race series around here, if you cut the trail, you are disqualified.  However some people have learned that when riding regularly, you can cut certain trails, in certain spots, and Strava doesn't catch it.  In some cases it can make a pretty big time difference.  We call them Strava-idiots because they are more interested in posting a good time than anything else, so all kinds of cringe-worthy behavior is justified - if they can post a faster time.

So I'm not against Strava or Racing... I'm against cheaters and %#$@#$ Smiley

Many of our races I am lucky if I just finish Smiley

Hey Bonsai, don't expect any of that 'left coast' stuff over here in these parts.

You step on enough toes by stating the facts or not embracing the herd mentality, you may find yourself riding alone.
It aint so bad.   Cool

Back around thirteen years ago, I used to cut a corner at Fisher Farm. Not because of speeding through the trail, but because it was so tight I always fell over. Some pesky trail builder kept building it back up instead of accepting the fact that it was the natural flow of the trail. I remember when you took the easy arc, you could make it up the log bridge that followed without a problem. As far as Stava goes, I use it to get my cycling miles added to the program that gives me a monthly discount on my Health insurance. But Mezeppa is already so easy, why do you have all these cut throughs. Maybe it puts undo wear on all the Full Suspension bikes I see riding out there.

LOL I may be moving from California, but I was born and raised in rural Illinois Smiley  I call it like I see it!

The problem we have out here is we get some pretty heavy rains during the winter, and if the trails aren't maintained they can get washed out... and can actually start causing damage to hillsides.  One trail in particular in Laguna Beach is this beautiful flowy trail of steep (but non-technical) single track.  You can cut the trail and blow straight down the hillside with no real challenge; the challenge is to see how fast you can ride the trail through all the curves and switchbacks.  And yet for whatever reason, 1 out of perhaps 100 riders feels the need to cut the trail, and it causes all kinds of problems with trail maintenance and hillside erosion.  It got so bad the ranger asked us to put in a split rail fence to try to reduce the problem, but people came in and took the rails out of the fence, so we had to take the fence out because it became a riding hazard. Sad

Well, if it's pink I'm heading the other way.

Nothing personal.  Smiley

I'm a big Strava user, but I would never cut the course to make up time.  I'm pretty much a rule abider when it comes to competition.  This is my 30th year of mtn biking (and racing), so I'm pretty set in my opinions.  From my few observations of Mazeppa, I found that young (late teenage) riders take all kind of lines (mostly just showing off) and motorcycle racers, that treat it like a GNCC course, create the problem out there.  I don't have anything against either of these groups of people, but that is the demographic that I have seen cutting trail on the few times I have ridden this trail. Just an observation.  Once a new line is created (and it is easier/faster) everyone starts using it.   I really don't care that much since I ride Pisgah mostly and there isn't a whole of issues up there.
