Catawba, '96?  Walmart Murray with my two sons on their equally expensive bikes.  Hated it; I was more into the road riding at the time and my sons were kicking my a__!  I'm still riding, they're not.

Lets see! I'm thinking it was about 1998 and I rode a Raleigh M80 that my sister had and it was on a greenway. It was either the one in south Charlotte or the one close to the UNCC.

It was early summer of 2000 on a Trek 820 hardtail purchased from Shane at BikeLine. My wife bought a Trek 800. Our first ride was on the perimeter trail at Frank Liske Park, as our purpose in getting mtn bikes was so we could ride park trails with our daughters (who were just starting to ride) since our road is too dangerous.

I think my first real trail was at Renni, but it may have been N Meck.

When I bought that first mtn bike so I could get off road, I had no idea it would change my life. It became one of my greatest passions and a major cornerstone of my fitness. My wife and I ride often together (she's cautious, but awesome), we've biked in 5 states and have organized 2 vacations around mtn biking.

1995 - Poplar Tent, Giant Yukon.  Thought I was going to die and almost swore off MTB forever.

Had a Schwinn High Sierra in black chrome in 1986 that I rode at Reedy Creek Park and maybe some places on the UNCC campus where I evidently convinced some folks to put up NO BIKES signs.

1990 on the trails around the then abandoned rock quarry between Crown Point shopping center and Margret Wallace road.  This was just a natural progression beyond McAlpine park which was my childhood haunt.

It wasn't until '93 or '94 that I loaded my bike into a truck and drove to trails.  Catawba (which I used to call Sam Wilson Rd.) UNCC, Auto Doctor by the airport, and Poplar Tent were in the rotation.  UNCC had some huge gravity cavities and what seemed like 25 miles of trails and was my fav at that time.

I quit riding from about '95 to about 2001 for some reason. Roll Eyes

Banana seat and all?

My first Schwinn shop also sold lawnmowers.  Actually think that was their main business.

))

Yep.
Looked just like this..
Built like a tank..
And you could get some good leverage with the high bars out of the seat.

If I had one that fit today.. I feel like I could jump on it and rip down many trails almost as well as the bikes I ride today..
One minus.. Sliding off the back of the seat to attack some steep downhill line aint exactly happenin'. But there is room for your gf, etc.. Smiley

First MTB was a 1985 Schwinn High Sierra black chrome. Paid 75 and an Eric Clapton ticket. First trail was BYT the MD side right out of our backyard hence the name. Built by a few of us out of necessity. Just got the bike back and after a few changes its hitting BYT again.

Moved to Charlotte (the University area) in '96 and found the ROTC trails just dicking around the apartments on an AMP Research B3.

First official trail was Renni.

I also remember that back then, it was hard to get anyone to tell you much of anything about the BYT.  You just had to "go find it for yourself."
