Catawba, '96?  Walmart Murray with my two sons on their equally expensive bikes.  Hated it; I was more into the road riding at the time and my sons were kicking my a__!  I'm still riding, they're not.

Lets see! I'm thinking it was about 1998 and I rode a Raleigh M80 that my sister had and it was on a greenway. It was either the one in south Charlotte or the one close to the UNCC.

It was early summer of 2000 on a Trek 820 hardtail purchased from Shane at BikeLine. My wife bought a Trek 800. Our first ride was on the perimeter trail at Frank Liske Park, as our purpose in getting mtn bikes was so we could ride park trails with our daughters (who were just starting to ride) since our road is too dangerous.

I think my first real trail was at Renni, but it may have been N Meck.

When I bought that first mtn bike so I could get off road, I had no idea it would change my life. It became one of my greatest passions and a major cornerstone of my fitness. My wife and I ride often together (she's cautious, but awesome), we've biked in 5 states and have organized 2 vacations around mtn biking.

1995 - Poplar Tent, Giant Yukon.  Thought I was going to die and almost swore off MTB forever.

Had a Schwinn High Sierra in black chrome in 1986 that I rode at Reedy Creek Park and maybe some places on the UNCC campus where I evidently convinced some folks to put up NO BIKES signs.

1990 on the trails around the then abandoned rock quarry between Crown Point shopping center and Margret Wallace road.  This was just a natural progression beyond McAlpine park which was my childhood haunt.

It wasn't until '93 or '94 that I loaded my bike into a truck and drove to trails.  Catawba (which I used to call Sam Wilson Rd.) UNCC, Auto Doctor by the airport, and Poplar Tent were in the rotation.  UNCC had some huge gravity cavities and what seemed like 25 miles of trails and was my fav at that time.

I quit riding from about '95 to about 2001 for some reason. Roll Eyes

Banana seat and all?

My first Schwinn shop also sold lawnmowers.  Actually think that was their main business.

Yep.
Looked just like this..
Built like a tank..
And you could get some good leverage with the high bars out of the seat.

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

If I had one that fit today.. I feel like I could jump on it and rip down many trails almost as well as the bikes I ride today..
One minus.. Sliding off the back of the seat to attack some steep downhill line aint exactly happenin'. But there is room for your gf, etc.. Smiley

First MTB was a 1985 Schwinn High Sierra black chrome. Paid 75 and an Eric Clapton ticket. First trail was BYT the MD side right out of our backyard hence the name. Built by a few of us out of necessity. Just got the bike back and after a few changes its hitting BYT again.

Moved to Charlotte (the University area) in '96 and found the ROTC trails just dicking around the apartments on an AMP Research B3.

First official trail was Renni.

I also remember that back then, it was hard to get anyone to tell you much of anything about the BYT.  You just had to "go find it for yourself."

August of '97, Poplar Tent, on a KHS 26" steel hardtail with a RS Judy XC fork and some bigass bar ends. Still have the scar on my left shin from where my pedal split me open while failing on some ridiculous line out there.

Early 2011.  Gave MTB'ing a try at the encouragement of a co-worker and his girlfriend.  Me and my Mrs. rented a Giant (not sure the model) at the WWC and joined them for a ride.  I was hooked immediately.  Bought a Motobecane Fantom 29er soon after and hit Sherman's first.

Summer '95 on a rigid Giant Sedona CroMo frame riding Sandy Porter trails, Poplar Tent, Sam Wilson/Catawba, Renni, BYT, Cane Creek, UNCC & Tsali.  Bought a Cannondale Killer-V Jan '96 & 6 more bikes since then.  Mtn biking was the catalyst for me to finally quit cigarettes in '96.

I couldn't remember the road "Sandy Porter" the other night when I called it "Auto Doctor".  We'd park beside the Auto Doctor shop to get back into the trails on the land that became the I-485 corridor.  GOOD TIMES.

I still get confused when folks talk about their pedals. You didn't say what year, so I'm assuming you meant you learned to ride with toe clips Huh

First CLT ride was about 2007 on my 03 Marin Wolf Ridge. 4-6" adjustable rear travel, and 100mm (pretty sure, maybe 120) marzochi dj3 maybe? Whatever it was, it was bulletproof! Moved to Clt after college (where i lived in Harrisonburg and rode all the amazing trails around there) then got fat. Then went to Sherman for the first trail in CLT and got done with roller coaster loop, then got dizzy and lightheaded and had to walk out after 3 miles... it was a great wake up call, got back in shape and lost 50lbs in 6 months, my (now) wife treated me to my dream bike a few months after getting back riding here, a 2007 Santa Cruz Superlight... and that was it... now i have too many bikes and ride lots of epic stuff. Dont have either bike, tho..  bith are long gone...

2010 Sherman Branch , Giant Ricon I got from El Toro , thought it was going to be cold and in the mtns, so I dressed super warm and wore boots and drank RedBull before the ride, all after working third shift. Also it was the first time I saw Dicky, didn't know or even have a clue to who he was . Needless to say I hated it so bad, swore never to go back but after a few weekends of going back I knew something was up for me so I rode there then BOOM Poplar Tent and the rest is history...Renni on a daily basis but the big boy trails on the weekends...RAMFB

1990 or '91 at Poplar Tent on full rigid Nishiki cunningham.
Would also ride Crown Point, Auto Doctor, and UNCC ROTC trails but mostly Poplar.

I think I started riding Renni and Catawba around '92 or '93 but can't remember actual year

1996, I was living in Winston-Salem and some friends and I drove down to Poplar Tent. It sure was a lot different than Hobbie Park. I was on my second MTB and it was a Schwinn S-10.

2003, Renni, on a late 90s Huffy. Wrong way, no helmet. Got turned the right way, ate it hard off the drop with the warning sign. Bike destroyed, quite bloody and lost a fingernail. Dropped the bike in a dumpster on the way out to the amusement of the softball players and bought a $300 Raleigh and a helmet the next day (my skills and equipment improved very slowly over time)

First Clt trail: Catawba River Front - 1995 +/-
Bike: Trek 830 Mountain Track rigid the "upgraded" to Rock Shox elastomer fork

I spent most of my time in the woods around my house and in the mountains on riding hiking trails back then.

Pretty sure that my first ride was at Catawba in 1999. My bike would have been a 1992 Specialized Rockhopper Pro (purple with yellow trim) with Suntour XC Pro groupset - fully rigid.

1989...Sam Wilson (parked on Heavy Equipment Road and the trail started where the Jump Line is today...Auto Doctor.....Poplar Tent...Cane Creek.....Renni was not official as i remember in 89 but I swear I rode a few times behind the produce market?  That was my rotation.  UNCC had a small trail and Crown Point had an out and back.  Drive to Tsali for the week end or get frigging lost in Pisgah.   I can't remember the first time I rode Beatty but I think it was 1993?    Now look at all the trails we have!!

2010 rode Poplar Tent once on a '98 Stumpjumper with a Judy T2, tires pumped up to 60 psi, seat jacked all the way up, longest stem on the market, and clips. Ate it 30 seconds in, then again every 5 minutes for the next hour.  Swore it off for 6 months until I signed up for ORAMM, how bad could it be? My buddies, who knew better, had an intervention.

2010'ish.  Sherman Branch Main. I had lived less than 10min away for 6 years and after hearing about the sport from some friends, finally decided to see what all the fuss was whenever I drove past there on the weekends. I used an old Walmart Huffy that had probably cost about 79.00 new. I forced one of my kid's small purple helmets onto my too large for it head and immediately started getting a headache from the pressure on my temples.

I went on a Monday morning when it was was mostly deserted. I did not even notice the kiosk except from the back and parked/entered by the porta potty where I had seen some walkers enter.  After awhile it seemed my lungs were hanging on the outside, my legs were complete rubber, and after multiple spills, the seat post was bent about 30 degrees sideways, the front brake lever was broken off and there was so much side to side runout on the front wheel that it kept rubbing against the brake shoe.

Finally another rider crossed me in the opposite direction and informed me I was going the wrong way. Totally humiliated now, I walked it out on the exit path, completely bruised and banged up with a destroyed bike. I was hooked for life!  Bought my first real MTB the following week!

My first mountain bike ride was probably around 1987.  I was on a Giant AT740 I think.  No such thing as suspension on mountain bikes yet.  Me and a couple of buddies rode a trail at Reedy Creek Park.  It was all single track that went through the park over to Plaza Rd. Ext.  We would ride it out and back.  After some time the rangers shut it down and told us we could only ride on the gravel greenway.

We also rode in Concord and Kannapolis in the area that is now Copperfield Blvd.  We started off of Mid Lake Rd and rode tons of trails that crossed under 85 and came out right where Branchview meets Copperfield now.

Probably in the early 90's I took a couple of spins around cane creek park with some friends.  Upgraded to another rigid bike in the early to mid 90's Diamond Back Apex (I believe).  Continued to ride here and there on mostly private land.  In 2000 I bought my first full suspension bike (Gary Fisher) and hated it.  Quit riding almost immediately because I hated it so much.

In 2013 got the bug again and started back. After a few rides I got rid of that Gary Fisher and bought a TREK hard tail.  A year or so later was able to ride a friends full squish TREK and fell in love with it.  And that was all she wrote.  Don't get to ride as much as I'd like too, but as soon as the parks open back up I'll be at it again.

We rode Reedy Creek Park until Sept '89 when Hurricane Hugo killed it. Seemed like hundreds of trees down. Used to ride there from UNCC.

Hey firecap. I did make trails over there at one time. I made the trail that went by the rest area to Copperfield before it was Copperfield. I had a friend from work that lived off of Concord Lake Road and we rode dirt bikes from his house down to the end of the road he lived on and crossed the creek and ended up over at the end of the road at I-85. We rode the trail that went under I-85 and we hit the hump in the field where the fence was at one time at 55mph and catch air for a long ways. Those were the days!!

Catawba River around '99 on a DBR Ti hardtail.  I came up from Columbia, SC to pre-ride the race course but it rained hard that night so I did not return for the sloppy race.  Back in Columbia I rode Harbison SF often but preferred Lynch's Woods up in Newberry.  I moved to Charlotte in '01 and starting riding UNCC and Poplar, our trails have come a LONG ways since then.

The first trail was at North Meck Park on a late-'90s Specialized Hardrock. This was in the mid-'00s. Road Poplar Tent & Ren Park back then too.

My wife and I moved here in November. I drove out solo and she was already out here for work. We had a rental for a couple months and most of our stuff was in storage, but I'd thrown my MTB on the rack when I drove out from CO. So first or second weekend here in November 2019 I rode at the whitewater center.

She's from out this way though, I we had done a bit of trail running before. We did the smoky mountain relay in like 2017 and whenever we visit her folks in greensboro, we do some trail running. I was pretty excited to get out here and ride. I didn't realize how much it rains and how much rain shuts things down. We don't ride we trails in CO, but that's rarely an issue.

1st real trail ride was at Tsali around 1992-1994 on rental bikes.
Locally was Popular Tent, Cane Creek, Renni, UNCC shortly after that.

Never was a fan of Sam Wilson and I'm still not, but the WWC beer and food makes it better.

It took me forever to find BYT, it was  such a secret at first. I got so lost my first time there since there was no signage...good times.

1996, beach springs at Poplar tent on a Giant Yukon. Man, I loved that trail! Devils Drop! That twisty singletrack just across the creek! RoundRock! The Jungle 1 & 2! Gravity Cavity - especially the hyperV drop in as you first approached it - nearly got whiplash on that or so it felt! The Swamp! That last tricky gully climb out! What a great ride that was! I can see how it has continue to influence trail building choices for years to come. Of course that can just as easily be that many of the same hands that made it have kept on building our amazing trail system of today. We have a lot of great variety in the Charlotte metro region for sure.

I was on a Bridgestone CB-0 with lovely slick 1.25" Specialized FatBoy tires.  Best friend Tony was on a rebuilt Nishiki Saga which he custom painted in our apartment laundry room.

1993. BYT before it was Back Yard Trail with some guy named Clay Hubbs we worked with as carpenters during the CPCC summer theater season.

Good times!

...they were so secret about BYT back then. No one would really said anything about it or tell where the entrances were. Shocked Heaven forbid if you ever got lost  Cheesy
