RTS/Mallard Creek Greenway Trails - Gone?

Print Post
I was riding RTS today on my lunch break as I do about 2-3 times a week and I am so grateful for a trail close enough to my home I can do quick lunch rides at.

But today I discovered half the trail just demolished and a gentleman with a large bulldozer clearing the area.

I was just thinking, while on the first part of the trail, of how awesome it was for someone to build these trails and keep them up (some trees down on the trail last week were cleared).

Does anyone here know the status of this trail from the trail builders' standpoint? Is there just going to be new fire roads through the area or are they slapping another residential area there?

It is so sad. I even saw a box turtle on the trail today and now I know it's habitat is just destroyed.

Do you mean the trails behind the old Montessori school? Where the paved path becomes gravel?

Yup, that's the one I was asking about. Sh*t. That was the only trail I could actually ride to. Haven't ridden there since late last year, was waiting until things dried out & was going to go this wknd. So much for that. Are both sections affected? Is anything savable?

There was clearing right after "mike's jump" (I know it's someone's name but I'm not sure it is Mike) all the way to the gravel road that splits both sections. But I did see flagging in the other section so it could be next. I will have to go check it out later this week to see.

Going going gone. It happens to a lot of trails built on someone’s property. It does suck but progress is progress.

Its Joe's Jump.  It was his idea to build that one.  Since he came out to help me I told him we could build 3 on that line but we only ever got the first 1 done.  Second toughest place I have ever built trail only overshaddowed by Uwharrie due to all the rock. Digging was brutal.
Oh well, there goes 2 years of my life. LOL. Glad people got to enjoy it. It's a real shame

Discovered that trail 3 or 4 years ago. It kicked our butts. We went back this year when the trails (Sherman parking lot) closed due to quarantine. Discovered that it had grown; kicked our butts again. I always wondered how "official" the trail was. I guess it wasn't.

It got the nickname of “fight club” among my pals after I asked about it here a couple of years ago and got the “it doesn’t exist” reply! Loved that trail. Thanks so much for the hard work on it. It was a great ride.

Thank you guys for a great trail. It was a gem and I enjoyed riding it when I could. It was a great training trail and had fun punchy climbs and speedy downhills with a drop and jump hear and there. I sure will miss it.

FYI, the trail is back and rideable for now, with some parts of the new trail gone for good. Site is getting developed, but until then it's still there.

It looks like an out-and-back, bidirectional trail with a single connection to the greenway.  Is this the case?

You can ride it both ways but it's pretty brutal going backwards. It ends on a gravel connector to the greenway, just turn left to get back to the greenway
