RoundUp Alternatives

RoundUp is just not as effective as it used to be at killing weeds, at least that's been my experience over the last 2-3 years.

Any suggestions on good alternatives, ideally off the shelf?

This is what I use. I buy the 2 1/2 gallon container of Glyphosate at 41% which is the generic version of Roundup and a gallon container of 2,4-D Weed Killer comes under variety of names it is a broadleaf killer but leaves most grasses alone. Then I mix 3 oz of Glyphosate  and  2 1/2 oz of the 2,4-D per gallon of water. Seems this combo has worked well for me.

I use a backpack with about 4 1/2 gallon at a time. I like to get a good fog pattern for larger areas. I've been told that there have been cases of the 2 chemicals when left over time mixed they may solidify, I've never had an issue. I pretty much always use all of what I've mixed and never rinse my sprayer out not saying to follow my example but is what it is.

You wouldnt catch me using Roundup, 2,4-D, or Glysophate even if they gave me a hazmat suit and oxygen tank. That &^&^ gives you cancer...

I have had great luck with all natural herbicides and nothing beats pulling weeds the old fashioned way. By hand...

+1..
You can special order glysophate 41% by the gallon at HD.
My experience is, it works great all buy itself. Give it a week or so to see results. And the results are, whatever you spray that's green, dies.

Wear long pants, rubber boots/gloves, minimum.
I also wear an N95 mask.
And it doesn't hurt to stand up wind of the area you're spraying..
Take a shower and wash yourself off immediately afterwards.

Most of those that have had problems with this stuff, were wearing shorts and literally spraying themselves and are landscape types that use a lot of it. I think the risk to the average user if the precautions in the instructions are observed is minimal.

Yep, tried that too, just as ineffective.  I suspect all this stuff has been watered down from a few years ago given some of the side effects and various lawsuits.

Weeds / grass i sprayed out a week ago are coming back.  Angry

Perhaps you are attempting to kill plant varieties not covered by the products or you have something that has a developed resistance.  Mother Nature is in charge.  Herbicides work through exploitation and disruption.  Not all plants are suseptable in the same way or equally.  It could also be that your application isn't sufficient or made in the right conditions.  Have the plants identified or forego herbicides and use other methods.  There are many.

Yeah, they do come back - you can mix the solution to be more or less concentrated (per gallon). I tend to just do a little maintenance spraying in the landscaping every time I cut the grass and it keeps them in check. Of course, when it rains for weeks at a time it can be an uphill battle. As for the health risks involved - I'm pretty sure everything gives you cancer now. But I still would avoid inhaling it or getting it on your skin as much as possible. Not that it matters, since the plague will apparently claim us all... Roll Eyes

I am wearing a mask when I spray now, so at least I have that going for me.

A couple of comments on this topic:
-  I buy Glyphosate and 2-4D Amine by the gallon at Tractor Supply. It's cheaper than the name brands (Roundup and Weed-B-Gone) and I've found it to be as effective.
-  I spray a lot of this on my property and did some research on the cancer issue when this became a public issue. Those who are known (that may be the operative word, though) to have gotten cancer from it are people who use it extremely regularly...professional landscapers, golf course operators, etc. No real evidence of typical homeowner use resulting in cancer. Also, the name brand Roundup has another ingredient that seems to make the glyphosate more dangerous. The generic brand doesn't have this.
-  But I respect it...as others point out, I always wear long pants and rubber gloves. I use a coarse spray that doesn't drift as much and I make sure I spray downwind and don't breath the mist or let it blow back on my skin.

I'd love to not need to use it, but my place would be a jungle without it.
