Who Was Col. Francis Beatty?

I had visitors in town over the weekend.  I took them for a hike at Col. Beatty.  They asked who he was that he had a park named after him.  I had never bothered to investigate before this question but this morning I did a bunch of google searching and came up empty handed.  That is mind boggling!  I thought for sure that information on who this guy was/is would be in Wikipedia or somewhere on the internet but I got bupkis.

Does anybody know the story of Col. Francis Beatty?

Who wants to buy the book, read, and then give us an oral book report? The short answer, local leader in the Cotton Industry. Died in 1983...thats as far as I got before needing to get back to work.
